On the 1% servicing USFK personnel does that include all non koreans in that line of work as the girls that work at the bars now in the majority of cases are not Korean correct??????

Personally, I have no idea. I do plan on doing a very thorough investigation once I get there. Totally in the name of correctness in reporting, of course.

As far as actual statisical measurements go, I couldn't find anything other than the following:

Quote:
The Ministry of Gender Equality estimates that South Korea's sex industry generates profits in excess of US$22 billion a year, while employing some 500,000 women and girls. But non-governmental organizations and civic groups suggest the number may be even higher, concluding that if all informal venues of prostitution, such as the myriad wonjokyoje, or younger girls "dating" older men for cash, were factored in, the number of prostitutes could well exceed a million. Venues where women and girls are available for a price total at least 390,000, according to civic groups, and they are quite literally everywhere in South Korea. Every neighborhood has at least a few singing rooms, room salons, business clubs, tea rooms or barber shops where sexual services can be bought. Given the openness of the prostitution and the leaflets and flyers advertising the multitudes of locations where women can be procured, one could be forgiven for not realizing it's all illegal. Legal prostitution was abolished in 1948. The anti-prostitution law - a bill that also gave a virtual green light to red-light districts - was enacted in 1961. And in 1999, legislation provided for publication of the names of those who procure sex from minors, though it is rarely enforced. The nation's Commission on Youth Protection asserts that more than half the girls arrested for prostitution are under 16.
Anyway, here's the url http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Korea/FE26Dg03.html

Thanks for the info sejongeb. I think this thread is important to point out to anyone that thinks, "it is USFK that has caused all the prostitution and human trafficking." It is simply false!

The title of this article is
Quote:
Republic Of Prostitution
from http://english.chosun.com/w21data/ht...302060032.html

Quote:
The Korean Institute of Criminology released figures on Thursday stating that prostitution is a W24 trillion business in Korea, accounting for 4.1% of the country’s GDP. The figures serve as a warning as to how prostitution is no longer something that can be seen as an individual's moral corruption. All the while it was discussed only in whispers and we pretended it was barely there, this monster of a business has grown larger than electricity, gas, and water (2.9%), and to be as big as agriculture, forestry, and fishery (4.4%)...... The sale of foreign women near military installations has already won international attention. According to this recent study, prostitution is going on in sex quarters, drinking establishments such as "room salons," in so-called "ticket coffee houses" as well as in singing rooms located in residential neighborhoods. If we get called a "Republic of Prostitution," there won't be much for us to say in response.

This one's from the Seuol Times. I don't know how well this will be received, but here's the quote:
Quote:
Koreans like sex. In fact they love it. Consensual, under age, extra marital, kinky; you name it, they do it. But most of all Koreans like paid for sex. Korean men that is. They live for it. They spend millions on it every month. They have countless ways of getting their rocks off for cash. Juicy bars. Barber shops. Turkish baths. Room salons. Hostess bars. Strip clubs. Massage parlours. Brothels. About 358,000 men buy sex each day. That's a lot of money. And a hell of a lot of sex. So why? Korea is not the first place you think of when the words ‘sex' and ‘Asia' are bandied around. Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, Japan. These are all places that have a reputation for pay for play horizontal dancing. But Korea is better known for its cell phones and fermented cabbage.
It goes on to say (Don't know if this is a PSA or a campaign blurp)
Quote:
Nearly 20 percent of men aged between 20 and 64 visit prostitutes on average 4.5 times every month, spending a sum that breaks down to 154,000 won (US$ 130) each time. The main reason for the predilection of sex for sale is as always, economics. The average female salary worker can expect to earn substantially less then their male equivalent.... Pimps feared that the influx of foreign men on a nightly basis was scaring off the Korean regulars, who were worried about contracting SARS or AIDS.
