VOLVO resale: Urban Legend?
Heard a rumor last week that the local Volvo dealership touted the resale value of their new cars to local military. Basically you buy a new Volvo at mil sales pricing, drive it for a year, then when you leave you sell it to a Korean for thousands more than you paid for it, but much less than they would pay if they tried to buy it on their own.
The first question that comes to my mind is that I thought there was an import tax that must be paid if a military member sells to a national. That surely must wipe out any "profit" (and explain the diff btw mil sales and local sticker). Anyone heard of this being successful? Or just a rumor started by bad math and slick salesmanship? No, I don't have that much cashish lying around--just curious... ![]() |

Re: VOLVO resale: Urban Legend?
Any deal that sounds too good to be true usualy is!
I believe the only way a soldier or airman under SOFA can sell U.S. manufactured merchandise (or foreign made?) is through the Korean Foreign Goods Transaction Office advertised in the paper. DSN 724-4371/4373 or 7914-4371/4373 (Seoul) it is the Korean Disabled Veterans Organization. (There are other legal ways for Jusmag or Embassy personnel.) Any attempt to sell Duty Free goods otherwise should be checked out by your legal office. (There is a coupon worth 10% in the Morning Calm if you wish to buy goods from the KDV, also.) Always check with the legal office, as this is a deal where mistakes can be costly. Believe it or not, there are those who will try to buy your vehicle from you directly, and avoid the tax. Both you and the buyer can go to jail. Does fish heads and rice sound good for 6-10 years? |

Re: VOLVO resale: Urban Legend?
I just called the FGTO ,their 10% discount coupon is only valid for the remainder of this year . The ad in the Morning Calm does not show it at the moment as they are running the holiday ad .
Hope this helps someone ! |

Re: VOLVO resale: Urban Legend?
Well, from what I know, it is not possible to sell the car to a Korean national without them having paying import fees. My older brother ran into this problem when he brought his car from Japan (a Honda Legend, RHD) and he tried to sell it when he got his new car. A Korean national was interested in it but he found out that the process was complicated and that an import tax would have to be paid. He resorted to selling it to another military member.
Now...in retrospect, I can see that it might be possible to sell the car to another person under SOFA with less of a loss...however, it'd depend on how much this military discount is. My older brother got his Saab through military sales and he said that he roughly paid $8000 less then he would've paid if he went through normal channels. |

Re: VOLVO resale: Urban Legend?
I sold cars one time with Exchange New Car Sales. As long as you own the car for at least a year you can sell it to a KN...but Lakbum is right, the Buyer has to pay the tax. So you could get your money back...but they might end up paying almost the same price as a new one.
