Yongsan relocation delayed by 5 years?

I knew there would be a delay because of the land disputes here at Humphreys but 5 years?

It seems like delays are expected. It is almost a joke when they announce anything regarding time lines and USFK.

When I first heard that it was going to be 2008 (like 4 years ago) I knew it would never happen.

Testing- my last post didn't take. Testing.

We all knew it couldn't happen that quick, didn't we? And now the money needs to be spent more wisely. I never thought putting all US eggs in one basket was a very smart idea with an adversary with missiles so close.

Re: Yongsan relocation delayed by 5 years?

Actually Itaewon will be affected, but less than you might think. There are people in Seoul who are not associated with the military presence who make up a large part of the customers in Itaewon. Just Embassies and their attached folks, plus foreign school teachers and import/export folks and Tourists from Japan spend a lot of money here. The military is only a small part of the night life, as many go back on post before midnight, and 2/3 of them are too young to go in a bar. The good stage shows in Itaewon do not start until midnight! Then the Korean businessmen take over after the GI's have done the warmup! The tourists, brought here due to military affiliation will still come up to shop for years, until, and if, the Pyongtaek Area develops into a newer, cleaner Itaewon. Maybe with free parking?
By that time, most of us will have moved on, and new commanders will be re-inventing the wheel with their dumbass ideas of how to keep both senior AND underage troops from having fun! And of course, in 5 to 8 years, Prostitution will have been eliminated by the Korean Government. Your thanks will be appreciated.

Re: Yongsan relocation delayed by 5 years?

Yes, unofficially, I hear that Eighth Army really wants to move down to the Hump. With current disagreement between some participants, and the change of presidents coming up in both countries, I don't expect any movement for a long time.

Re: Yongsan relocation delayed by 5 years?

There are two fundamental issues that are preventing the move from happening.

#1 $$$$$$$$$ How can Korea lower their share of the expense?

#2 The waning attitude of American military presence there.

Pragmatically it is not possible to build the required infrastructure to meet the requirements.

In the event they attempt to meet a rushed deadline I hope the American government will send a team of civil engineers to have contract compliance.
