Re: Army limits AIP

I think they came up with a decent solution by restricting extentions to one year if you haven't deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. If they rotated an entire brigade from here, there wouldn't be anyone left to to do the job here.

Cool Re: Army limits AIP

Sounds right. Korea is a dirty job, but someone has to do it!
I hear it a lot, about AIP meaning Avoid Iraq Program. That is sad.

Re: Army limits AIP

They would still have the Tropical 8th to do what ever mission is or was here.

I would like to know how since FSTE is completely different and has been around since the early 90's.

I know a guy who has never AIP'd and has been here since 99.

Re: Army limits AIP

The Department of The Army changed the policy this year to limit people only to a total of 5 years in Korea. This change also includes IPCOT, FSTE, and AIP. It has been approved by ur Brigade Commander, and has to be approved before ur 120 days out. If you DEROS already states that you will be over 5 years. Then you are an exception to the policy because it was approved before the new change took place.

Those who are doing their jobs at home bases in the U.S. or Korea are *still* serving, and their service is just as important as those who are in the desert....those who deploy often rely on those units back home for support, etc.. everyone has their place, and their purpose, and front lines or no, what they do, or where they do it from, it's just as important. For me, trying to say that someone's service is not as valuable just because they haven't deployed is getting into territory a little too dangerous for me.
I was just in Iraq, and on any given day I experienced more danger in just that one day than I did in my entire eight years combined in Korea - to include the time I spent on the DMZ as an infantrymen.

I knew several people in Korea who didn't hide the fact that they were going to stay as long as they possibly could because they knew rotating to the States meant deploying to Iraq. It was something that soldiers joked about all the time.

And it's not a matter of serving in Iraq being more important than serving in Korea. Is just a simple matter of fairness.

And hardship? Call it what you want, but getting shot at and mortared on a regular basis is a hardship. Being stationed at Yongsan, living off-base in a nice apartment, working five days a week... that isn't a hardship.
