Spouses and working in Korea
Here is the new news for Military Spouse's....This was asked in a different thread but I'll make a new thread so it does not get lost.....
Straight from ACS USAG-Humphrey's..... The latest guidance on Military Spouse Preference (MSP) under new SC 315. Under the change if the military spouse comes to Korea at their own expense they will no longer be eligible to be referred as an MSP. MSP will need to be command sponsored and on their sponsors orders when they come to Korea to be eligible for this preference... I tried to find a link but could not....I'll keep looking...

Re: Spouses and working in Korea
Military Spouse Preference just has to do with GS jobs right? And it's not saying you can't still get the job, you just can't use the Military Spouse Preference option. Is that the way everyone else is reading it?

Re: Spouses and working in Korea
I read it to say that a ncs will no longer be receiving the military spouse preference, not that you're not eligible for work at all. You just don't get the extra oomph that comes from the MSP. The MSP is just an extra check by your name, so to speak, in the whole overall process of applying.
In all honesty, however, from what I'm hearing on other official boards, service specific boards so this may be only an AF thing...more and more, spouse preference is going out the window when it comes to government jobs, anyway. It's very hard to get your foot in the door anyway you slice it. Even the military sector is now wanting locals for the simple reason that they'll be sticking around longer. The MSP seems to be coming into play more with the *portability* of jobs, aka if you already have a GS job, you're more likely to get your foot in the door for one at your next base...so from the way I'm interpreting this change, it will actually be more hurtful to NCS spouses who are already in a GS position, who want to get a position on base, or an NCS who is up for a position against a CS spouse, where both are theoretically equally qualified..in that situation, a CS spouse could be chosen because of MSP. NAF jobs are not GS jobs at all, hence why they're NAF jobs.. :) Places like Chili's, the clubs, etc. shouldn't be affected by the change at all. DODDS school positions, as far as the teaching , or staff positions would definitely be affected, as they're GS positions. With subbing, I'm not certain...it depends on how it's classified. I'm not sure about AAFES, whether the store clerks are considered a GS position or not. Secretaries on base would definitely be a GS position that could be affected by the change. In all honesty, however, while this may not be a popular position, I personally wish they would allow more NCS spouses to fill positions in onbase offices where communication is essential, than Korean nationals, because I know of more than one situation where a language impediment on the part of a Korean employee has caused major problems. I know there's a certain level of hiring that's required by the SOFA,and necessary in the interest of "Good Neighbor' relations, but if nothing else, I wish HR would screen their employees for language skills. Re: Spouses and working in Korea
Dee, I couldn't agree w/you more, and in more ways than one. I too took that as NCS can still apply but won't receive MSP. Also, I wish they'd hire more spouses to put in positions where language barriers might be an issue. You wouldn't believe the issues I had trying to get my license because apparently we weren't understanding each other. I'm not even going to get started on that though.
I was originally wondering because I had a friend who tried to apply for a CDC position and they told her she wouldn't receive MSP anymore. I was surprised that the information was not more widely disseminated so I was just checking for validity. Oh yeah! Go ahead and put me a chicken strip meal w/curly fries, cheddar and honey mustard from Arby's in SLC's box:)

Re: Spouses and working in Korea
Are MSP rules the same everywhere or is it a base by base thing? Would this apply at all installations here or just Humphreys? I was talking to another lady on a different forum who is at a state side base. She told me that she wasn't allowed to use MSP because she didn't move to the base at the same time as her husband. I don't know if that's a rule at all stateside bases or not. It sounded like it was just a rule for the base she was at.
