Fort Hunter Liggett, CA
Have anyone been there? from the map, Fort Hunter Liggett seems in the middle of nowhere. The closest city is King City which is so small. Will be pcsing there. Get used to the city life, wondering if I can survive there. Any suggestions or advices will be greatly appreciated.

I used to live below there, at Vandenberg AF Base. I see you are near Big Sur and Monterey! Highway One, along the coast, is one of the most scenic roads in America! Monterey and the area surrounding is a beautiful city! My wife and I loved the California Coast as much or more than anywhere we have lived! I don't know the area well around the Fort, but I would jump at the chance to trade places with you. We lived 8 years at Vandenberg, and enjoyed every minute. Please don't worry about the coast! The only drawback might be expensive housing, but if you are in the service, you will be fine!

Re: Fort Hunter Liggett, CA
Peg,
I was stationed there from Oct 2004 to Oct 2005 Get ready for the heat it get's hot there 100 to 110, 90% of the year is nothing but sunshine. There is outdoor stuff like (Hunting, Fishing, Camping). Lake Nacienmento (Spelling) if you like the water stuff. King City has hospital and strip mall.....Paso Robles has Wal-mart, Sears, Albertsons and all the fast food joints. When I was there we were allowed to use the PX and Commissary plus all the MWR stuff. You were allowed to live on post in Government housing and yes, you will pay rent and utilities. The closest city to FHL is King City at 25 miles next is Paso Robles at about 40 miles and a lot of small towns in between. Salinas, Monterey, Ft. Ord is about 1 hour drive on HWY 101. Do the HWY 1 drive...lotsa scenic stuff and ocean views. Average rent is about 900 to 1200 plus utilities add the cost of the commute if you stay off post. There's only 3 ways into FHL....HWY 1, By Air and Jolon Rd. Be very careful on Jolon Rd. Lotsa Deer, Bugs, Birds and farm animals that get loose. As for living, Paso is okay, King city is quiet, Monterey, Ft.Ord, Marina sits right on the Bay...stay away from Salinas unless you like gang life. Google city-data.com more info there. Good luck Bones |
