South Korean soldier sentenced for sexual assault on American
This is one of the first stories I have read of a South Korean soldier sexually assaulting an American soldier. From the Stars and Stripes:
A South Korean 6th Infantry Division soldier was sentenced Wednesday to 2 $)C(v years in prison for sexually assaulting a female U.S. soldier during a joint training exercise.Anyone else feel there is more to this story? Spc. Brandy Willey, who witnessed the event, said the man entered an all-female barracks between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Dec. 19 and used a flashlight to locate the soldier on the bunk next to Willey!/s.

Re: South Korean soldier sentenced for sexual assault on American
Over at GI Koreas, this was blogged and commented about.
The focus was on the fact that the sentence was suspended - meaning no jail time as long as he doesn't screw up again within the next 4 years. I don't know how common such a verdict is under similar circumstances with Korean-on-Korean crimes of the same nature. I do know that suspended sentences for base protests or breakins and what not have usually been handled with suspended sentenes. |

Looking at it from a strictly Korean perspective-
Sexual "assault" is not considered a "crime" in Korea, especially if no one is physically harmed, I think. The guy made an attempt, got slapped and rejected, and left the area. U.S. law considers this pretty terrible. The majority of the rest of the world would not clog up the courts with such minor stuff. Women do not hold much respect as persons in most other countries. Boys will be boys is a common attitude in most of the world. It is still generally a man's world. Our (U.S.) attempts to convert the world into believing that women are equal and deserving of more respect has not really caught on. Sorry. We should lock the doors at night. We are not having much luck converting Muslims to Christianity, either. Maybe someday we will learn a more productive hobby, and start cleaning up our own country first!
