Real Problem... Need some help.

Hi, I'm 17 years old, and I have to go about getting a social security number, on my own. I've never really done anything on my own, so, this is kind of scarey. Here's my problem...

My parents never got a social security card for me as a child, and I'm having, now, to apply for one. I already went into the office and filled out the paperwork, and application, and gave over the required documents, but my question is; what is the possibility of me not getting a Social Security number? I'm a senior in high school, who plans to go to college, and plans to get a job, and this is VERY important to me... Please help me out if you can.

Thanks,

Trust the process. If you deserve a card, you'll likely get one. Jump through the hoops and everything should work out. Just make sure that you get all of the paperwork and show them all of your documentation.

All the best to you.

I would also recommend that you follow up on it several times just to make sure the paper jockeys are doing what we pay them to do in a timely fashion. Ask them what they can do to show you that the process is working, it might be nothing at all, but it is worth asking.

Re: Real Problem... Need some help.

Here's the US government's social security website - with a link for how to apply. Hopefully, this is your original source of information:

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/...i=&p_topview=1

I'm surprised your parents never got you a card until now. You can't claim a child as a tax exemption if the child doesn't have a social security number, so they've payed more in taxes for several years now.

I'm not assuming that young millerjones came from a normal, or even taxpaying family background. We are not all so lucky. We wish him luck, and hope he can find a high school counselor whom he can trust to assist him in whatever needs he has as he finishes his education.
