Question How do I pull AFKN from off post without a decoder/box?

Non DOD/military USA citizen here, residing in NW Incheon.

Korean cable provider cut the AFKN today.

Any way to pull the signal, old school style, with rabbit ears from the UHF signal?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Re: How do I pull AFKN from off post without a decoder/box?

Try looking at channel 34 on your regular tv antenna. Rabbit ears probably won't do it. Even if you build a fringe uhf ch 34 antenna the signal may be too weak. The antenna is on Namsan, and is weak that far out. We have a difficult time getting a decent picture here in Seoul, due to so many reflections from so many buildings. But give it a try! Let us know if you see anything.

Mr Joe is right...there's not really too much you can do. The signal was never intended to be picked up that far out.

Sorry!

10-4! Another FREE Site: look at http://mediahopper.com.

Click "Allow popups" to make it work. I like the Canadian news programs. You can get many countries and languages, click picture for full screen! ESC to go back.

Re: How do I pull AFKN from off post without a decoder/box?

thanks all for the replies so far!

i know the signal wasn't intended to travel that far.

i remember when cp. ames closed and the afkn "plug" got pulled for daejeon. retired military living in the area threw a fit, but eventually everyone learned to live without.

just trying to get a way around it; i don't care if it's virtual snow.

i'm hardcore on my afkn, and unfortunately, watching off the net or downloading torrents just won't cut it.

looking into some serious antennas now. i'll let you know if anything pans out.

I'll look around and see if I have the plans for making a big UHF antenna. Don't spend money buying one, as it may not work, even with an amplifier.
For now, try to find an authorized USFK friend near Incheon who has a satellite dish and decoder!

Well you could always by a Slingbox and have someone one base run it for you... or just have someone in the USA run it for you and get REAL television instead!

I must say though that Star Sports, from the Yongsan cable package, is an awesome channel and I wish I had it in the USA.

For Kitekid and anyone wanting to try to get CH 34 UHF from Namsan.
see:
http://uhfhdtvantenna.blogspot.com/

This is fairly easy to make, and should work on the outskirts of Seoul.

Re: How do I pull AFKN from off post without a decoder/box?

thanks for another good idea about the slingbox, ssnapier. does it have to physically be turned "on" on their end for me to watch it, or just hooked up?

looking into the antenna now, Mr. Joe. thanks!

watching back to back law and order on ocn every night is driving me INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!
