What happened to the U.S. MIA/POWs?

I was a little surprised to see this fact: 8,176 U.S. soldiers are still listed as missing in action 7,140 were POWs of whom 4,418 returned.

That is still several thousand missing service men. I can assume many died and were never identified, but you have to guess North Korea kept many after the Armistice and probably shipped many to China and Russia. Anyone know the facts?
