One of the key ideas in general anti-US sentiment in South Korean society is that --- due to USFK's presence and the amount of dependence South Korean society had on the US for much of its existence --- the US was in a position to ---- well ----- pretty much dictate what happened in South Korea. If you dig into this, however, it is so much more complex.
President Syngman Rhee often made the US in Korea pull its hair out from the start back in 1945. Here is the first of at least 2 articles from the 20 April 1960 about the beginning of the fall of the Rhee presidency - it is the same post I made on my blog: I have been HIGHLY, HIGHLY unsystematic in my searching and presentation of these archived moments in US press coverage of major events in Korea’s modern history. ![]() I wanted to cover/learn more about the Russo-Japanese War, but so little has been going on there, I needed to check out more periods to use up my monthly articles subscription. Anyway, I’m jumping into the middle of different events rather than starting at the beginning of one and following through. So sue me… Today, I take my first look at 1960 - the year President Rhee’s government fell since he became Korea’s leader in 1948. ![]() Here is a wikipedia bio for President Rhee. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
