Lesson 2. YES and NO , CULTURE LESSON
Hello guys,
Today, I would like to introduce YES and NO expressions in Korea. I will try to improve my posting skills considering other memebers who regularly come up here to read my post. I thinks it's something more organized that I could present 1. Cultural background 2. Expressions 3. Examples in order. A. CULTURAL BACkGROUND Koreans are not familliar with the way to express YES and NO. It is belived that you should not clearly express what is on your mind on YES & NO issues. It is taught that If you express yourself clearly about whether you like something or not, It could irritate some people in general. a lot of Korean people get offended in this way. For example, the majority of westerners would like to express themselves on any issue, but are concerned about considering another person's feelings. Let's say,"Speak your mind and sleep well at night later!" Look, most Koreans do not to speak their mind readily, which causes many cancers in various ways. If you are silent with another other person, you will have a big issue because you haven't interacted with them. It is very common culture in korea. Example: Restaunrant ,YES AND NO ISSUES 1) JAMES(president who is 50 years old) - Hello, What would you like to have for lunch? I'd like to eat SEONJI GUK BAB SEONJI GUK BAB (Beef's Blood with RICE) 2) Young buck: "Um, Mr, president, - I have been to a sushi restaurant recently. Sushi has Omega-3 which is considered an essential fat for senior people. Would you be able to consider my suggestion?" (Youngbuck dislikes sungee gook bab, because it is just rice and blood of beef. So young buck may be considered to be a SMART BUTT to make a suggestion to him, but I can't say simply "no" or express I don't eat such food: I would like to do it,but it might offend other people in Korea.) - I would like to go SHUSHI BAR, what do you think? 3) JAMES: It's cool. Let's go I was able to avoid sunjeegoodbab while suggesting new things. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Language point Today, If you understand above cultural bacground sections, I would like to introduce useful Korean expressions. 1. SANG GAK HAE BOL KE YO : 생각해 볼께요, SMART BUTT to avoid direct YES and NO answers and make time to think about what to do next. 생각해볼께요 means I will think about something in general. It is very very tricky expression to avoid any questions that you do not want to answer It is good considered to be good expression ,not to offend the koreans plus you have plenty of choices for suggesting something else. 2. SIL YEO YO - 싫어요 , NO 3. JO AH YO - 좋아요 , YES Example: 1) JENNY:A. How are you youngbuck? Would you like to go out with me tonight? I'm interested in riding your car. I can move some sticks too, B. Can you show me your sales record for January? 2) Youngbuck: SANG GAK HAE BOL KE YO - (trying to be SMART BUTT) Youngbuck choose to answer A and B by simply not using YES and NO.
