Lesson 5. Shopping and negotiating
Hello all,
I'd like to introduce a couple of nice phrases for shopping. The purpose of this lesson is to avoid any Rip-off movements casued by shop owners. Especially, iif you are shopping at the markets such as Dongdae moon, Namdae moon including local markets in your area: They do not have retail prices set up, and it is quite common to rip people off. 1. It is necessary to compare prices with the same item . 2. Let them know you've been living in Korea for a long time . Dialogue: (Youngbuck is shopping , he's looking for fresh veggies, youngbuck wants to go to a local market instead of E-Mart due to freshness.) Youngbuck: E MO(female) or SAHMCHON(male) , UL MA E YO? 이모, 얼마에요 -> Aunt/ Uncle, how much is this ? Youngbuck does not know this AJUMA, but he's using friendly words by calling her E -MO. Youngbuck wants to act friendly in order to bring down the price and trying to be smart butt. Use either E-mo or samchon depending on the person's gender. Emo (aunt) Sahmchon (uncle) AJUMA( shop owner) : 5,000 won 드려요? -> Take it? YOUNGBUCK: E-MO or Sahmchon , AHN DAY YO, NEO MU BISSA YO. 이모 안돼요, 너무비싸요. -> Aunt/Uncle, no way,it's too expensive! Youngbuck shakes his head left and right while using words AHN DAY, AHN DAY (no way, hoss!) He expresses his concern that the price is 'way too expensive! You can use AHN DAY whenever they give the price! It means that the price is way too high and you want a discount. As some of you may know, I have been ripped off by Burger King, and I'm sticking to McDonalds! :) AJUMA : 그럼 4,000원 에 가져가요. -> then, take it with $4. Ok, Folks. Remember calling E-Mo for female shop owner and SAHMCHON for male shop owner. You will be able to show them friendliness as well as you are proving that you have lived here for a long time. I believe there are plenty of local markets in Songtan, Pyeongtaek and Osan. If you are interested in fresh (straight out of a local Farm) groceries, I would suggest you to look for local markets rather than going to E-Mart. I bet they will give you extra fresh veggies along with hospitality, and you will see someone like granny selling really good veggies from her own farm. They will go nuts when hearing E-MO or SAHMCHON ! thanks
