Numbers...
I thought this might come in handy. I found it confusing when I started learning Korean. The simple mistake ended up costing me...literally!
10 = Shib 100 = Beck 1,000 = Cheon 10,000 = Mahn 100,000 = Shib-Mahn 1,000,000 = Beck-Mahn Notice the pattern emerging...try keeping in mind that "Mahn" is ten thousand and not thousand; or four zero's (digits) and not three. The commas behind the digits also tend to throw people off. 10,000,000 = Cheon-Mahn 100,000,000 = Eok 1,000,000,000 = Shib-Eok 10,000,000,000 = Beck-Eok 100,000,000,000 = Cheon-Eok The "Eok" is eight zeros (digits) after the first number. 1,000,000,000,000 = Jo ... And so on. I don't know the term beyond "Jo". Last edited by eddiev9 : 12-18-2005 at 01:50 AM. |

Good info on Numbers! Welcome home Lurker- contribute your expertise anytime! I started out at Osan years ago. Been in and out for more years than most of you have lived!
here are two good sites for counting and numbers [And learning to read & write, something I continue to say you can do in a few days!] go to: learnkorean.com/k4fun/k4fun_life_NM.asp also see: download.com/ReadWrite-Korean/3000-2279_4-10030120.html (I left out the http//www because that caused an underline, which changed your ability to see the underscores(_) and dropped out numbers in the second site.) good luck! there are others, but these have sound for best pronunciation! |

I know. One is already there-it is a sort of "sub-link" of the one you put in Links. To those who do not know, LINKS is a good place to check out.
Most of these language aids cost a small amount to purchase-less than $20. For those eligible who are no good at self-paced learning, go to your Army ACS or the Base Education center and ask about free Languge lessons. If you are serious, take the college courses using your GI Bill or whatever, and it will count for your degree. [ I have 9 semester hours in Korean from the U. of Maryland.] Actually a simple way to get 9 hrs! :) You may lose your rank, your money, and even your job, but NO ONE can take your education! |
