Hey bud!
After I wrote the note asking more inputs, I found your input on another thread explaining about your personal affection for the area! Yeah- start a Kunsan Fan Club thread, or the like, if you wish! I'm sure at least 99 people will read it, (like this thread). We hear that the facilities have improved greatly over the years. I'm wondering, though, if my gut feelings were correct. The mission may dictate that flying is king, and maybe we don't want to reveal some things. (We used to tell outsiders that Osan was a hell-hole, so others wouldn't come and mess up a good thing!) |

Re: Long December in Kunsan Video
Hi guys!
Well, I was at the Kun from 95 - 96 & I loved it. I still dream about going back. I heard about all the blow about Osan being so great, but when I went up there I was not impressed at all. Sure, they had great stuff & all, but it was like being at a state side base, everyone was out for themselves, no comradere at all that I saw. Yea, Kunsan wasn't as hoiety-toitey as Osan, but we all stuck together like brothers & to me that is what made Kunsan special. As for the other questions, of course you had the foregin chicks trying to hook up w/ our guys (or hooking up w/ our guys) but I don't think it was as prevelant as other places. Heck, in most cases, unless it's a juicy, from what I understood it was a no-no in the Korea culture to marry a GI. As for it being "dead" I wouldn't say that. Yea, there is nothing right outside the base, but like I said, we were like brothers, so while on base we were always hanging out together doing something & Kunsan often offered tons of trips & stuff off base that got us out & let us experince the "real" Korea, which IMO was better than experincing some Walt Disney type mock-up of Korea created to cater to Americans. But if that was what you wanted, A-Town wasn't far. The food & drink was great. Tons of juicy bars if you were into that. When I was there they even had a bar that featured tall, blonde Russian women. As a woman myself, I lacked nothing at the Kun as far as amenities. But I wasn't I treated any different from the male GIs either, so if you are one of those fluff-fluff chicks looking to fool a guy to do your work for you, might want to steel yourself for a rude awakening. If they're in a gas mask, so will you & if they're filling sandbags, so will you. (And before anyone gets any ideas, I wasn't one of those females anyway - I always pulled my weight.) Bottom line, I was at Kunsan & I loved it. I would have never traded it for Osan. Heck, if I wanted I could go to Osan anytime. But I always came back home to Kunsan!

Re: Long December in Kunsan Video
I always liked the Kun better than osan. If you get out and travel around, the Kun has you closer to the less foreign travelled southern half of the country. The food, to me, was always better at the Kun because it was more 'country'. If a body goes there and is worked to death by their supervision, with little time off, and they sit in the barraks during their down time and get drunk and miss mama back home, then they will probably have a bad time. One thing about the Kun that has always been true is that the tour there, whether it sucks for many or whether it is a great, hard working and fun time,,, depends great deal on the wing leadership during any given tour/time. If the leadership is good, the tour is good, if the leadership goes there with the idea that they need to change absolutely everything about the base because the whole thing is morally under water or what ever reason any leader has for turning a wing and base inside out, wanting to make that star, or what ever , then they tend to make everyones life at the Kun a super misery for a year. Just my humble opinion.

Re: Long December in Kunsan Video
Ive been in Korea for 10 years now..and 8 of the years have been here at Kunsan and the other 2 were at Osan....Kunsan is the place to be at..in terms of the mission we do here. We are a tight group here, little smaller than Osan...but a better atmosphere. I hang out with all types of folks..not just cops (im..well used to be in SFS). lots fo stuff to do in Kunsan...and the Services squadron here..and what they have to offer, is the best in the USAF. the Loring club, is the best when compared to Osan's club's. Now off base activities..not all that good...i mean you have A-town...and kunsan city, but both of those places are dumps in my opinion. They just opened a new club in Kunsan City called METRO...this is owned by Kieth..the owner of Coyote Ugly(off limits bar). this club is the largest american style club ive seen!..really bigger place..but how long will it stay open, is the question.
We have some folks that have return back to the Wolfpack with thier wives(korean), and they live off base. I wouldnt recommend a non-korean spouse to come here...jobs are really hard to get...especially on base. |

Re: Long December in Kunsan Video
Well, Mavic88,
You have succeeded in making me even more homesick for Kunsan than I have ever been. If I had extended during my last tour, I would've been running the fitness center. For my mother's sake, we chose to continue on to the follow-on at Luke. My mother lives close by. She recently went into stage 4 cancer, so it's a good omen that I am here to support her and help the situation. As for A-town and Kunsan city being rundown, you're probably correct. The areas to hang out in are Naun Dong and Mun Hwa-Dong. These are areas between Kunsan and A-Town, closer to Kunsan, though. Real Night Clubs, Oompa Lake, International beer bars, and ****tail bars.
