On lock down??!!!

I just read in the Stars and Gripes that Kunsan is on lock down because two SF Airmen and a worker at the GNC center decided that they wanted to beat up on a taxi driver.

From all the articles that I have seen about Korean taxi drivers, I now know that is one of the worst professions to work in. Seems that there is always a taxi driver getting beat up. Are they doing something that is provoking the attack? I personally have been in a few taxis when I was at Osan/Songtan and in the Deagu and Kwangju are and have been cheated on the fare...but it's only a few dollars. You want to risk your military career over a few bucks? If you have the view that you need to take abusive and retalitory action against a taxi driver, I guess we should keep them around as a tool for force shaping. I don't think you will ever win a court martial or civil case with the defense "I rolled the taxi driver cause he cheated the fare."

I can bet that not only these two individuals from 8 Security Forces Squadron are on the "top people we want to blanket party," list, but also any member of the SFS on Kunsan. I bet they, any SFS member, are not getting the best of looks on Kunsan. Hope the cooks don't spit in their ham and cheese scramble.

And isn't Kunsan coming out of an ORI? What a way to close out an ORI with being locked down.

Re: On lock down??!!!

It's a shame that the whole base now gets to suffer thanks to the idiocy of a few folks..

I have no doubt whatsoever that the cab drivers here can instigate situations, I've had a couple of questionable fares myself, and heard more than a few horror stories about the treatment of customers by cabbies..(SLC's story in another post for example)... but I have to agree with fishe, it's not something worth losing your career over!

And these guys were SP'S? You know , you'd think that they, of all folks would know better than others, the consequences of stunts like this..

I have to say it...between the frog throwing incident of a few months ago,and now this.. I find myself what's in the water down there! :)

Dee :)

Re: On lock down??!!!

Now that frog trowing into the intake incident is just absolutly crazy. I wonder if that was due to the fact that the base was on lock down at that time (not related to the cops and the cabbie incident right now) and they were just frustrated. Reading the Kunsan paper on-line, the majority of incidents are caused by cops. But then cops police their own a lot harder.

Re: On lock down??!!!

I spent two years at the Kun, and the SP's were the worst offenders, especially the town patrol. Anybody remember why the "A" club or coyote ugly bar was put off limits the first time? It was SP's. Keith, the owner, was cool, but should've kept the cops out. Yes, everyone should read the base paper online, it highlights all the activities of the SP's. Just look for the article 15 headline. Or, go back even further, and look up the story about town patrol working up in osan. The LT got busted for various illegal activities there. Well, all thats old news, and many people from A town knew how the TP was. But why does it still go on? I think that the leadership is blind, and the senior NCO in charge of the patrol keeps it quiet, to keep himself from looking bad. Well, he always looked bad from the regulars in A town, but the rest of the people were blind. One night, a GI mouthed off to the patrol, they cuffed him, walked him up to the shack, and soon came the ambulance. Hm, how did he put a gash in his head while in cuffs? Well, he was quickly let go shortly after the medics took a look at him. I guess he tripped, lol. Anyway, thats my 2 and a half cents worth, and I'm so glad I'm gone from that corrupt prison.

Re: On lock down??!!!

I think you gotta look at the commander. For example, when I was there (95 - 96) we SPs did very little horse play b/c we knew our commander would have our asses in a sling. When I was there the troublemakers were Ammo. Now it's the SPs. In the next year it will be someone else. Anytime you have weak leadership, the troops will run wild, no matter what squadron they are from.

Well said. Bad CC's (and bad SNCOs) will absolutely destroy a unit.

Re: On lock down??!!!

Hmm...you know..the information about the indivudal getting busted in Atown and then recieveing wounds from the incident...is ture..the COPS slammed him to the ground and then after he busted his head, then cop let him go, and told him to go to the hospital. It would seem to me, that you must also be a cop, because only certain folks know about that incident...

As for the A-club...the first reason why it was shut down, was due to some cops jumping a candian teacher..for no reason. The busted his jaw and he had to go to the hospital. im pretty sure, none of you folks knoew that, because the news was never released, but all the cops knew about it, because everyone was recalled and made to fall in formation. what happen to these cops..they got Article 15's..thats it! Keith persuded the teacher not to press charges, due to it bring bad publicity to his club. Kieth paid the hospital bills, and the teacher, just wanted an apoloigy from the cops (there was 3 of them). Well i escorted Kieth and the teacher on base, and we went to the parking lot and saw these guys smoking by the smoke pit. Kieth told them why they were there...and he satrted talking to all three of them....and the OPS officer heard they were outside, came out, and told these 3 cops to come back insdie, and the Capt talked with Kieth, teacher, and me...about how the cops were not going to say anything, because they are under investigation. Kieth just said, that no charges are being filed, and that the teacher just wants an apoligy..thats it. Well come to find out....the story was twisted, to the fact that, Kieth was at the base to blackmial the 3 cops, and if they didnt pay him 5,000k each, he would go to the cops....that never happen...!His club still remains closed to this date!! And your right...tis the cops who had it closed!!!

Re: On lock down??!!!

Plus in regards to the taxi cab....i was with these guys in atown that night...and i went back to base, and they headed off somewhere else. I believe the taxi cab driver wasnt as hurt as he said he was....he got a huge pay check, just because of that incident...these guys were all drunk...I cant say anything else about the case...but these cops involved were on my flight...now 1 is being held in Korea jail, as is the civilian! The other cop is innocent, because he was just there, not involved in the assualt! He is getting busted on curfew though and article 134...also their trial is on aug 14th

Re: On lock down??!!!

mav: Yes, I am a cop, although I left the Kun around 96.

As for them roughing up somone for "no reason" I find that hard to believe. There is ALWAYS a reason. You may not have percieved it or known about it, but there was a reason.

As for the Art.15, you must not know what that can do to an SPs career. It can end up in discharge! So while to to non-cops an Art.15 may be no big thing, to us it can be a career ender!
