Kunsan vs Osan

"Is Osan really the assignment of choice?" The answer is 'NO'. Problem is that most people look at it from just one or two perspectives.

It is obvious that I am partial to the Wolfpack, but am very interested in discussing anyone and everyone's thoughts on what they like and don't like of each location.

I have spent plenty of time in Osan...

Ok....Who's going to comment first?

I prefer Kunsan, of course. It's my hometown. It is where I met my husband!!!

Cool Re: Kunsan vs Osan

I was at Osan my first tour in Korea. Stayed 3 years, learned a lot, hunted a lot, studied the language, fell in love, got married.
Came back to Seoul 10 years later. We lived on post and enjoyed the job and the good life. Adopted our daughter there. Flew to Kunsan once on the way to Cheju Do. The airline was not allowed to open the curtains on the ground. Secrets, I guess. Never gave Kunsan a fair trial.
We still love Osan, our first home. I like Seoul as there is a lot to see and do. Most fun is driving out in rural Korea. It is beautiful in the mountains. We may stay a long time. We enjoy four seasons.

Re: Kunsan vs Osan

Kunsan Airport shares the runway with the base. That is why the curtains stay closed.

Re: Kunsan vs Osan

Hi guys!

Well, I was at the Kun from 95 - 96 & I loved it. I still dream about going back. I heard about all the blow about Osan being so great, but when I went up there I was not impressed at all. Sure, they had great stuff & all, but it was like being at a state side base, everyone was out for themselves, no comradere at all that I saw. Yea, Kunsan wasn't as hifalutin as Osan, but we all stuck together like brothers & to me that is what made Kunsan special.

Re: Kunsan vs Osan

I did the Kun twice and Osan four times. Better unit esprit de corps at the Kun, usually. Trouble for the younger troops isn't right outside the gate as it is at Osan. Numbered air force headquarters at Osan, being at any headquarters base always keeps the eyes upon every detail. Let's hear it for life at the Kun!

Re: Kunsan vs Osan

Hi Rick!

Well, it has been a long time since I have been at the WP, but some things I would have found helpful are to learn the language.

Most of today's Koreans DO speak English, but on some of the tours the WP hosts are in "inner" Korea where they are more Koreans who do NOT speak English (or choose not to) & sometimes we had to figure out how to catch buses, trains, etc. on our own & it would have been so much easier for me had I been more proficent in the Korean language.

Plus, it is always helpful to be able to speak to ppl properly in their own language. Even if you don't get it right, they will appreciate that you've tried & treat you more kindly.

Also, do not be afraid to go on the tours they offer. They may seem boring at first glance (zoo, baseball game etc.) but often times they are very interesting & exciting.

Go shopping. You can find great deals on everything from blankets to boots to clothing. Most can be found in the town outside Osan, but you can also shop in Kunsan City too. If you want to go to Osan to shop, just get on the Wolfpack Wheels. Me & my buddies used to make a day trip of shopping at Osan, or an afternoon of shopping at Kunsan City.

Also, go out to eat. Overall, Korean food is very good & you will have chances there to eat some food you will never experince in America. The resturants are quite nice, as are hang outs like bars & coffee houses.

And if you are married, be careful if you decide to get into the juicy scene. Those girls will bleed you dry & if you get caught messing w/ one & you are married, you might find yourself w/ an Article 15. When I was there the rules concerning adultery were quite lax, but I had a buddy go to the Kun recently. He got caught messing about & he got an Article 15 & loss of stripe! So know the temprament of your squadron & base commander beforehand!

Finally, take pictures! Korea is a very beautiful & exotic country. You will want to have pics of your time there. If they have not changed it, the Kunsan main gate is actually quite beautiful, at least it was IMO.

And most importantly, have fun!!!!!!

That's about all I can think of. Good luck on your tour & don't listen to the Osan bummers. Yes, Osan is nice without a doubt, but IMO Kunsan is the place to be. And remember if the Kun doesn't strike you, you can always visit Osan whenever, if that is you want.

Go Wolfpack!!!!!

Re: Kunsan vs Osan

Thanks Dane, I appreciate all of your advice on the Wolfpack. I intend to get out and see the country. I really like to snow ski, so I am looking forward to that in the winter.

No, I'm not interested in that whole "juicy" girl thing. I just hope to be able to spend time getting some schooling done when I'm not sucking rubber.

If you can think of anything else, please let me know. I leave 2 Jul, so I am getting excited!

If there is anything I can get for you while I'm there, please let me know!

Thanks again!
