Internet Service Speeds
Well, finally arrived at Kunsan and got internet hooked up in the room. I have the 2 Mbps package, and am getting about 450 Kbps down and only about 60 Kbps up according to the speed test at dslreports.com (Using East Coast.. NY and NJ servers). Does anyone else on here get much higher than that? Are the higher speed packages worth the extra $10 or $20/month? I have heard that the pipe back to the states is only 2 Mbps, so the only speed advantage with the faster plans is on the Korean peninsula. Anyone else at Kunsan mind running a speed test and posting the results here?

Re: Internet Service Speeds
If there is a large group of leechers, I reach speeds of 4 megs/second on the upload. Very few (if any) of the leechers to whom I refer are in Korea - they are worldwide. I have Kornet's Megapass NTopia service.

Re: Internet Service Speeds
The only choice here is LG Daecom. Haven't tried any P2P use yet, just running some speed tests to see if video-conferencing will work on MSN, Yahoo, etc.
Does anyone know of any local english chat sites? |

UPDATE! Internet Service Speeds
Figured it out! This will probably be helpful to anyone trying to access US web sites from here. Go to http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest and run the speed test to establish your baseline speed. Then run the "Tweak Test" to see what suggestions they have. After running the "Tweak Test" modify your RWIN and Time Stamping settings. Advanced users can do this through the registry, or you can download DrTCP for free from DSL Reports...it is just a GUI (windows interface) to modify these settings. I calculated my optimal settings using the formula in the FAQ on the site and my connection speeds to the US jumped from about 550-600 Kbs to 1700Kbs. Basically, the increase is due to optimizing your computer to account for the tiny delay that occurs due to the distance the data is traveling over the Internet. Even though it's only about 200-300 milliseconds, it has a huge impact on the connection speeds. I know that there are a few computer savvy people on here, so if you have any corrections or other suggestions, please feel free to chime in!
