Kunsan will change over the next 3 years!!

Kunsan for most folks are a 1 year assignment..but many folks are taking the KAIP ($300 a month..to sign a 2 year tour here). This plan is good for single folks and no GF or BF back in the States.

Over the next 3 years...you will find new dormitories being built and tons of new folks coming to Kunsan. Actually a whole bunch of Army troops making new home here at Kunsan. Plans are in the works for 3 tower dorms to be constructed...with one i heard of housing over 500 troops. These new dorms will be the 4+1 style...with a common living area consisting of a kitchen, living room, and a washer and dryer. Also each of these new rooms, will feature its own bathroom.

The dorm that many of you Wolfpackers out there seen being constructed now..will be the first 4+1 dorm at Kunsan. There are rumours out there that this dorm will go to the Army..this is not true..I've heard that it will go to the residents of 1303, 1315, 1411....and in place of these dorms is where the 2nd new tower dorm will takes place.

There is no more new land here at Kunsan...instead folks are building up, instead of out. The only new addtion when it comes to land....is a new helo pad to be constructed for all the Army helo's coming this way. Not sure when the actual Army migration to Kunsan will take place...but i imagaine within the next few years!

The bottom line is Kunsan, Osan and Humphreys will be the main three U.S. installations with all the smaller ones disappearing over the next few years. Additionally, I see Korea being a 2-3 year tour minimum with most people starting to bring their families over. This is especially true for Osan as they are expanding the family housing big time. You may even see a push towards Kunsan become a 2-year tour minimum even without family.

They may be out of room, but they are building vertically. They are constructing new housing that are 10+ stories high if I recall correctly. They are also almost complete with the new Chilis.

Yes...you are correct in Osan possibly becoming a command sponsor base with 3 year tours and the fact they are constructing more tower dorms on base. I believe the KAIP plan was the result of this to save money on PCS moves, and to make tours on the ROK..more of a short tour...than a remote...meaning that you could automatically get orders now to Osan or Kunsan for a 15 month tour...with no bonus. I'll bet that this will take place within the next year. No more 12 months tours..but 15 months, and the possiblity of getting the KAIP to go 3 years with a $400 bonus. This is just my assumption...but...this could happen!!!!

Interesting

Interesting, I'm reading the same talk that was floating around thirty years ago about Korea and assignments. It must have more reality behind it all now with all the shuffling around of peninsula bases that has been put in motion by the current administration. If my memory serves, the only real room left on Kunsan AB proper is the 9 hole golf course. Perhaps they should build on it. I don't know if its just me but, I never did like those huge dormoitories they started building. Your just giving the little guy up north bigger targets. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see some air force fighter wing assets shifted back to one of the peninsula air bases we left in the eighties, early nineties.

Osan

Only one of the three housing towers are complete. The other two towers and adjoining parking garage will take more time. They are not dormitories. They are replacing the older 900 sq foot base housing apartments called Mustang Valley Village.
Unless you mean more dorms near the golf course.

Cheers,
Chuck
