Korean Customs
What are some of the Korean Customs/traditions that you have found most difficult to adjust to?
For those that are Korean, what do you see is the hardest thing for non Koreans to adapt to? For me the one that took the longest to adjust to was the taking off of shoes as unlacing and relacing boots was such a pain.

Yep. My boyfriend doesn't stop when he takes of his shoes. He just keeps walking and they automatically slide off. We're supposed to change our shoes in the school, but I hardly ever do and usually nobody notices. They have slippers here that I just cannot walk in. I'm afraid I'm going to fall down the stairs.
For anyone in this position, the best thing to do is just buy yourself a pair of comfortable inside shoes and keep them in your office. One thing I've found hard to get used to is when anyone walks into the teachers' room everyone yells "annyounghaseyo!!!" Twenty people could walk in at different times within 10 minutes and they'll say it to everybody. Sometimes it scares me. I understand saying "hello" to someone, but if I'm busy doing something I just don't pay attention. Another thing, is that what if I really want another drink at the dinner table and nobody notices? I hesitate to do this, but sometimes I just take the bottle myself eventually. Then I try to pour my drink under the table because if someone notices they'll take the bottle from me and start apologizing. |
