Wink Need help? Ask me..

I'm about to graduate DLI, and one of our instructors has promised to teach us anything we want to know (i.e. profanity, etc) after our graduation.. Any requests? I know a bunch already... Only problem is, I can't type in Korean with my crappy computer but I can do it phonetically. I'll take the top 5 requests and get to work!

Re: Need help? Ask me..

Can't tell if that was sarcasm! I've just heard Koreans say that type of language "doesn't exist" in Korean for 15 months. Of course I knew it did - you can't watch a Korean film these days without loads of profanity. Like it or not its a real (and often necessary) component to language, and you can't really learn it from any course or book.

That being said, yeah, maybe its a bad idea after all. Any personal requests can hit me up by email.

Re: Need help? Ask me..

Yeah in a way your right that it's every where. But then again it sounded like you just wanted to teach us how to curse in Korean. And what we don't need is some drunk american going downtown and cursing up a storm in hangul at some Korean and getting in a fight. Although I'm sure most koreans know most curse words in english I'm sure they will really take it to heart when you call them something in their own language. Just a thought.

But here's where I would say it's good to know Korean curse words (I know most of them since I'm korean). When I was riding in an on base cab the dude called me something in Korean and I called him on it and he made some stupid lie up and I told him that I understood Korean. So I called him a name back in Korean and left my money on the seat.

Re: Need help? Ask me..

Mike,

"Welcome and thanks for the help!" I have been in Korea straight on since Jan 1994. Add to that many years starting from 1980, then 1984, working as a liasion Officer in Pohang with the 1st ROK Marine Division for a year in 1993-1994. I graduated from DLI in 1979 for Chinese Mandrin and in 1988 for Korean. Was an interrogator for 10 years. Have been married to a long haired dictionary for many years. Have done three TV series and mucho radio.

The mission of a DLI graduate is to come out to the real world and learn jargon that they aren't taught. No IPW I ever met ate dinner at the American Embassy the evening prior. The cirriculum [sic] at DLI is 8-10 years behind what the locals are actually speaking. Idiomatic expressions (Slang to you folks) aren't even close.

Don't humor the boaluta.......its a lot of work.

Hell I thought ship pal kaesekie meant I love you.

whasbo sends

not sure I understand what you're getting at... Mike was simply saying 'welcome' and thanking him... or was this thread an excuse to list accomplishments?

Cool Re: Need help? Ask me..

I understand Whasboa very well. I had the recordings used in an old DLA course, and it sounded like North Korean! Then I came to Korea, and learned the basic stuff from less educated KP's and Cooks at the Chow Hall (DFAC) at Osan many years ago. They swore a lot.
Cursing in Korean is (mostly) different than in English. It is never appreciated by any Korean, and the only purpose to learn it would to be to defend yourself from defamation by some drunk, which is actually NOT a good idea.
Our (U.S.) version of "Defense" is usually hitting another person - which is not done in Korea without creating a real problem for yourself. Turning the other cheek works best. Usually YOU will be jailed, and not the person you hit. If someone wants to study profanity in Korean, go ahead, but please do it through means other than this forum. Maybe we can get the experts together in a bar in Itaewon or Osan for a special class!
