Re: BJJ in Wonju

Hey Guys,

I am up here at Camp Casey. Where is the closet place that I can train BJJ on the weekends? I heard about John Frankl's class but they said that area of Seoul is off limits right now. Thanks in advance.

Re: BJJ in Wonju

I didn't notice anybody mentioning Wonju...

It is 1 1/2 to 3 hours from Seoul by bus -- in Kangwon Province between Seoul and Kangnung which is on the east coast.

It had 250,000 people around 2002.

If it has a Brazilian based martial arts academy - my heart will explode....

Frankl is a friend of my instructor here in CA and trains at my school in Santa Cruz.. his school in Seoul is off limits? They'll have to keep good surveillance on me to keep me away! ;-) I'll choke myself out before I stay away but thats just me. There's a waiver for everything, right?

Not that his school is off limits but that particular area of Seoul is off limits. I had heard that they train in the Yonsei Univ. Gym which is in Sincheon which is off limits at the moment. I am not sure if that is still where they train or not I tried to contact John Frankl but have not had a response yet.

Any other places out there to train guys in the Seoul or Uijongbu area?

Re: BJJ in Wonju

Hello everyone hows it going? I noticed you all were inquiring about bjj clubs and such in the Seoul area. I have a friend that trains at Brasa BJJ in the Seoul area under a brown belt Lee Seoung Jae who has trained and competed back in Brazil. He was promoted under Leo Viera. If you can or knows someone who can read hangul here is there website www.marcgo.com
I will be in Korea the month of April with my wife visiting family down south and hope to compete in a local tourny in the seoul area with some of my team mates from our club here on Okinawa. We have a purple belt instructor, three solid blue belts including myself and quite a few white belts. Our club is affiliated with Marcelo Alonso BJJ / Team Carlson Gracie. Do any of you know if there are any guys doing bjj down at Kunsan?? I wanna get some training in before the tourny while I'm there. Also, if any of you have any info on upcomming tournaments hit me up cause I will take a hop there in a minute to compete!!
Thanks and nice talking with you all.

Re: BJJ in Wonju

OK, I took the bus to Yongsan today, and the subway to the M.A.R.C. Brasa BJJ school. They weren't there. Even though the web site showed two ~3-hour classes on Sat and Sun.. I talked to a few locals and they all say that they don't train on weekends. I called the instrucor, Lee Sung-Je, and he said to come at like 2 pm during the week. Not possible for me, from Osan. Just in case anyone else wants to give it a try, I went out gate 1 at Yongsan and walked to the Namyong station (line 1). Transferred at Dongdaemun to line 3. Stopped at Mi-a station (use exit 8) and just walked like 2 or 3 blocks straight ahead to the Nike building. Its on the 3rd floor. Took about 30-40 minutes to get there.
