Write about the military in a newspaper
I'm looking for some people to write a column about "military life" AND "the military community." Ideas could include community events for members of the military OR community events that the military undertakes for the Korean military. Any ideas, I'm all ears.

Hi Matt! Welcome! I believe you will get some help here soon. I'm not sure they will know that you represent the Korea Herald, but they do now.
I read the Times and the Herald occasionally, and sometimes your columns. I feel sure this is not an ad, (any consideration involved, if any, should not be discussed on the forum), but a sincere offer of an opportunity for someone to broaden their horizons! Please make yourself at home, and join in our exciting forum as you feel the urge. Hopefully you can help us present the U.S. Military as generally good guys, who are much more than just drunks and rapists, and actually print some good things about us! |

Re: Write about the military in a newspaper
Guys and Girls in the military...
When you hear about those small events for community service out in Korean society ----- like volunteer English language teaching, visiting Korean schools, orphanges, old folks homes, helping farmers with a harvest ---- ----the kinds of things Stars and Stripes sometimes reports about - but never get into the Korean press ---- FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD ---- please let this guy at the Korea Herald know about it!! Any of you who spend time with Korean adults will have learned that --- just trying to use a few phrases and words of Korean with them --- is a BIG DEAL to them -- just showing a little effort to get to know and like Korea goes a VERY long way....... You know every GI suspected of a crime (and doing a crime) is going to be put into the press... So, here we have someone at the KH (English version) asking to be let in on things ---- --- tell him when and where these community service projects are coming up.... |

Re: Write about the military in a newspaper
Thanks for your help guys.
I do represent The Korea Herald. If you know of anyone who would like to give writing a shot, then please urge them to contact me. I am trying to get this off the ground starting in August. It's not a major time commitment, although deadlines are important, just once a month or so. We can talk about ideas for topics later. The reason I am using this forum is because I would like to get someone "normal," not necessarily someone from public relations. It should make for a more candid view of life and events in the military. please e-mail me at mattlamers@heraldm.com Matt |

Re: Write about the military in a newspaper
If I was still stationed in USFK I might have done it myself. Hopefully someone does take him up on this offer. It is a good opportunity to get the word out about some of the good things going on in USFK instead reading about the few idiot troublemakers every month.

Re: Write about the military in a newspaper
GI, I am not 100%, but he did no mention military life in Korea, he said "military life." If that is true, I may give it a shot.

Re: Write about the military in a newspaper
I did mean 'military life in Korea.' As we are a Korean newspaper, it has to be Korea oriented.
I haven't recieved any e-mails yet, so if anyone knows anyone that might be interested, please talk with them about it. matt mattlamers@heraldm.com |

Re: Write about the military in a newspaper
OK I still have not had ANY interest in this. I am quite surprised.
Maybe it is true ... the U.S. military doesn't so anything positive in the community in Korea whatsoever. If you disagree, please contact me. Matt mattlamers@heraldm.com |

Re: Write about the military in a newspaper
Matt, go to http://www.goodneighbor.or.kr/index.php?str_block=eng They have lots of positive USFK/Korean stuff.
Most military people probably don't want to write about their experiences in Korea because media always twists peoples words. It disgusts me when I hear what my girlfriend tells me that the Korean media feeds their people about US and US military. There were people that claimed those 2 schoolgirls in 2002 were run over by the US tank on purpose. Some of the s*** that Koreans believe really disappoints me. The average GI in Korea doesn't have any bad intentions towards Koreans. Alcohol is usually the factor when "ugly" incidents happen. This applies to both sides of the fence...I've seen drunk Koreans behaving horribly in public plenty of times. That's my 2 cents......... Last edited by Mr. Joe : 08-01-2007 at 10:19 PM. |
