Camp Casey: Housing

Hello all! My fiance and I will be moving to Korea shortly after our wedding. AKO says that he will be stationed at Camp Casey, and we were wondering if we could get any advice on housing. We know that we need to look off base and we are looking for help in finding a good realtor or a website with apartments for rent. We would like to stay as close to base as possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I hope that your AKO account is correct....I would not base anything off what AKO say's, unless your husband has an MOS that is EXTREMELY needed here in Korea.

Sorry I don't mean to be an a$$ or anything, just want you to know what actually may/will happen.

Housing in Korea, around a base is fairly easy. My only other advise is WAIT until he is established in a unit before you follow him. If not, you may spend ALOT of money on hotels here in Korea.

I checked with him, and he told me that he has actual orders in hand that say Camp Casey, Korea all over them. We have already decided that I will arrive in Korea after he gets established, but we would like to find an apartment before we get over there so that he doesn't have to stress about that along with everything else that will be going on when he first gets there. We've been trying to find realtors online, but haven't had much luck, so now I'm turning to this forum.

You can't be sure of anything about apartments before you get here. The one you decide on may NOT be available when you get here! Wait and do it after he gets here. Bring money. ...And don't expect his unit to let him come home every night. There is no predicting until you talk to a sponsor.

Re: Camp Casey: Housing

I agree with my pre-posters. Before I came over, I checked online too. The prices were higher then you would find here.

The only advice that I can offer is to look in Uijungbu. It is not directly by the base, but it is close. It is also on the subway line, which will make transportation easier.

You could also possibly look at apartments in Yongsan. It is right near the main base, and your husband can commute in on the weekends. Then you would be near shopping, base activities, and downtown Seoul for exploring and shopping.

But absolutely have your husband look for places. I would suggest a studio, since it is just the two of you. If you apply for cs after you get here, you would be housed at Yongsan. So, it might be better to look in Yongsan and Itaewon areas anyway.

I have heard, not seen, that the places around camp casey are shady. It is also really rural, so there might not be as much to preoccupy your days.

It sounds like you are on top of everything. Good luck.

I've been talking to a lot of people who have been in Korea and who are already there and they are saying the same thing. I'm definitely not going to move with him right away and I'm urging him to try and get in contact with the people listed on his orders so we can start getting the information we need now. How much money do you think we should have on us when we come?

Thanks for the great advice! We want to try to stay as close to Camp Casey as possible, so that we can see each other if he's allowed to live with me. I really like what I've heard about Yongsan though, and we are going to do all we can to get command sponsored, so we will definitely look into housing there. His only problem with getting a place outside of Seoul is if he is able to live with me, he wouldn't want to have it be a weekends only thing. I'm really glad to hear that the housing is more reasonable than the prices listed online! Does your BAH cover your total housing, or do you find that you take a pay cut each month? I looked up the BAH (overseas of course) and for my fiance's rank, I believe we will get a little over 1,200 a month. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

It's different depending on where you live here in Korea. And of course, the more expensive the area, the higher the BAH - and vice versa.
