WTB/acoustic guitar... advice?

Hello, I’m a fairly new guitarist (about 6 months of playing). My sister bought me an electric guitar and amp for my birthday while I was in Iraq, it was a nice surprise when I got home… anyway… now I’m stationed at Osan and would like to purchase an acoustic guitar. Can someone tell me what I should get? I’d like one with pick ups so I can plug it into my amp. I have about $200 I can spend for one. I just don’t know what brands are better... what to look for. I like to play rock/punk/early 90s grunge.

Thanks
Filkove

You might have difficulty finding a decent acoustic electric for less than $200. Two shops near Osan AB that you could look at are "Peace" and "Mr Potatoe's". "Peace" offers a larger selection, but I hear if you purchase a guitar through "Mr Potatoe's" he gives you free lessons.

I can tell you that you will NOT find anything "decent" for $200 in the "acoustic/electric" version. Most of those are upwards of $300-$400. Your best bet for those types of guitars is going to be at http://www.musiciansfriend.com

There are, however, some nice, plain acoustics for under $200. I just bought a very nice "Michael Kelly" acoustic at Peace music for $160, they have another one for the exact same price. They throw in a soft case, but charge for hardshell ones.

I play mostly metal and hard rock. If you are looking for lessons, let me know!

Re: WTB/acoustic guitar... advice?

Sorry, a little late chiming in here. The Mr. Potato head guitars have a very good reputation and are great bang for your buck. I've only heard positive comments about their quality over the years. I believe they are sold mostly in Osan~ as someone already mentioned.

Near the gate of Humphreys is a very good guitar shop. If memory serves correctly, Morris Acoustic guitars are pretty good. They're made in the area. Peal guitars are also made in the area. They're exported to the USA, Canada & Europe mostly. You might be able to find the odd one. Just look for the better quality Korean made~ rather than Chinese made ones.

In general, be careful of many guitars that are made in China with top brand names etched on them. Some seem to be slipping into Korea. Check the Label to see if the English is very decent. Also, closely examine the quality.

In Seoul, Nagwon arcade (Lines 1,4&5 Jongro - 3 ga, go out Exit #5) is a great place to buy a guitar. Very few of the dealers are willing to budge on price. I know a couple (since I've been dealing with them for years). Be very careful, as I've been told that some factory seconds and lower quality guitars end up there.

Shindang Market (Shindang Station Exit #1 take your first right and walk 1/4 of a mile) is a great place to find a good deal. Mr. Lee, (affectionately known as the "Soju Papa" (left side) is very kind and you can usually negotiate a good price with him. On the other hand, the brothers Lee, though curious and friendly can be a bit cantakerous (right side).

They also sell some guitars at Camp Red Cloud. Though overpriced and badly maintained, they have a few gems. (Topic of my next thread.)

Finally, I sell mostly used acoustic and classical guitars. PM me if you would like to come over and take a look.

Cheers!
