Airman with some questions about korea
Hello everyone. I guess ill start by introducing myself. I am 24 yrs old and leaving for bmt next week. My AFSC is 2w1 (aircraft armament apprentice). This might seem a little pre-mature since i don't even know what shred i am going to be assigned to,but here it goes anyways. If by any chance i do get to go to korea (which i heard is pretty easy if u volunteer) is it impossibe to do take online classes at the same time? i realize the the bases there are always doing excercises and that they work u to a bone over there. I am not planning to take a full load of classes or anything, but am considering taking 1 or 2. Thanks in advance for any help u guys can give me.

I know plenty of my airmen took classes while I was stationed there last year. You'll probably want to get some idea of your workload and whether or not your schedule can handle it, but I'd say you shouldn't have a problem taking classes. The ed center on base can help you out, and they also offer classes that you can attend on base if you prefer in-residence to online. Hope that helps.

Welcome flip2pogi!
Korea is generally an easy assignment to get. If you come for 2 years you get an extra $300 a month and $400 a month for a three year assignment. They are paying people to come out! There are several universities on base. Yes, there are a lot of exercises, but they are mixed between the numbered air force and the fighter wing. Typically, they don't play together. If you are maintenance you won't have the luxury of studying inside. I know most supervisors allow people to study during the night shift portions of the exercises. Also, since the Air Force encourages getting a college degree your unit will most likely work with you and proved study time. Another good tip is most classes pause during the exercises and have Friday make-up classes. I heard this from several people in my flight that were going to school. They hated going to school on Friday nights, but they had a chance to get 100% attendance. Another great benefit is taking CLEPS. They are 100% free and count as full college courses. I completed 6 of them when I was in Germany and only had to read a short book for each. The education center will have a list of books to read that match up with the tests. Even if you don't come to Korea feel free to ask military questions here. We have a lot of experience here! Mike

As stated above, there are many times to get a degree. Korea is a great place to live and learn. Mike, becareful on how you explain AIP. If there initial assignment is 2 years then they get no extra money, If they AIP for 1 year (and there initial assignment was 2 years) then there tour turns into 3 years and 4 years if they AIP for 2 years. Then the money kicks in. The good thing about AIP is you get paid from the time you sign the paperwork.

i just have the feeling that you're filipino too (like me) though i'm not sure if you speak and understand the language (tagalog). anyway, online classes takes a lot more time than regular class, but i think, it'll still be feasible since i'm taking one right now. i would admit that there are times that i get too loaded and backed up since i can't log in everyday, but i can catch up (if you are wiling to sacrifice enough of your "personal time", you can catch up, too.) CLEP, DANTES and ECE are good options too, since just tested most of my requirements to get my CCAF. just make sure that your school is miltary-friendly so they understand if you request extension if you have time-constraints in your job. if you need help with anything, do not hesitate to ask and we are all here to help you or at least point you to a good reference. good luck on your training!

Re: Airman with some questions about korea
Whats up man, I'm 2w1 as well. Let me first say you are going to love the career field. Weapons troops always have been, and always will be known as hardcore partying m'fers. Secondly to answer your question about school, I'm going to be honest here when I say at least for the first year you are going to have too much on your plate to worry about schooling.
As soon as you graduate bmt, you'll be off to tech school which will last three months or so. Once you get to your first base you're still going to be adjusting to the military lifestyle. Work on the line (flight line) isn't a cake walk, It's long hours. You will still be learning your job, CDC's Career Development Course, and so forth. Some shops tell the airman not to even sign up for any classes untill they get thier CDC's out of the way. Once those are gone, take all the classes you can. I'm heading to the 25th at Osan in Feb. Hope to see you there brother |
