Looking for info about serving in Korea.

I'm a 20/m from TX doing my MOS-I here at Ft. Gordon. I've seen some paperwork for volunteering for Korea for a year or two and I've got some questions.

I'm wondering why the DA offers AIP for it, Is stuff just that expensive?

Is there stuff to do?

Good for 25C's?

I'm loving every bit of my enlistment and I'd like to know If Korea is a first time go, from soldiers that are there.

Any assignment is what you make it. As radio Repair it will be no different than any other assignment. Just remember AIT is just the basic skills you will learn a lot and enjoy the Korea tour. See the country meet the people learn some of the language. That is the key to enjoying any overseas tour not in a war zone. Been retired 11 years but my best memories are the overseas tours. Good Luck

Yes, you can AIP here, for either 1 or 2 years. For 1 year you will get $300 extra a month and for 2 years you will get $400 extra a month. Just remember if you AIP for 1 year your total time over here will be 2 years and if you AIP for 2 years your total time will be 3 years. Also when you sign you paper work to AIP you recieve the money from the month you sign your paper work so if you do a 1 year AIP you can get up to $7200 for 2 years and for the 2 year AIP you can get $9600. If you do it early enough you can add an extra year of AIP pay.

Also google 8th army and you can find the website.

The AIP is to get people to stay in one place, with the high turn over rate here in Korea it is nice to have the same person at finance for more than 7 months.

Welcome damemorder!

Korea is not expensive. The AIP is used to keep military members here for two years or longer. This saves the military money on shipping costs and ads much needed continuity to the forces in Korea. There is a COLA that helps with the cost of living in Korea.

I have added many links to the links directory that may help you research more. I think you found the best site already for info on serving in Korea.

Taichan,

You will find most young soldiers think Korea is a place to drink, drink and do more drinking. In one year, a lot of soldiers will spend much of their income on drinking and chasing girls. Probably more in Korea than any other assignment. This not a majority of soldiers, but it is a lot of them.

Korea has a lot to offer and many things to do. One reason I set up this site is to give soldiers an alternative to going downtown.
