Hello all! I am new here...and found this site quite by accident about a year ago. Joined about a month ago...and here I am!
I am a military spouse writing in concern to my husband going on a 1yr assignment to Kwangju...after much anxiety and conversation...my husband & I decided I would take kids and go to our next fallow-on while he did his 1yr assigmnet in Kwangju. -We did and STILL do waver with the idea of me requesting to stay here in Okinawa where we have been for the past 6yrs. Does anyone know about this the base in Kwangju?

Not sure about the base you husband is going to, I'm sure there will be someone who does. Feel free to ask questions, you can also check out the NCS thread under Osan and it will answer alot of his questions. You should beable to stay where you are know with no problem. You should not have to ask either. You want to stay there end of disscusion. Although Korea is a great place.

Mechman,
I know very little about Gwangju. I am guessing it is a small installation. IS there a lot to do outside the gate? Any good places to see? Welcome to the site! Mike

Re: Kwangju/Gwangju
Gwanju AB is actually a ROKAF base, There are 27 Airforce assigned. Our job here is too manage WRM assets. For the past two years we've shared the base with of course the ROKAF and about 500 army personnel who are about to be sent to Camp Carol. So it'll be pretty quiet here.Good news is we don't exercise alot due to the isolated location, bad news is the army is leaving so all our base amenities will go along with them. For example our cable tv,phone and internet service will be gone because SSRT doesn't want to support such a small number of people. So that will be hard on us through the upcoming holidays.
As for entertainment there's not much to do around here, its a 10 dollars cab ride to downtown, which has the usual shopping oppurtunities there are some good restaraunts around town. You just have to get out and find stuff. We have some bars near the base which will probaly be closing, there's not in terms of MWR trips in our area, but we can travel up to Osan or Kunsan to participate in one of there trips. One thing about being here you get to drive alot on the highway which at first is scary for a person not used to Korean driving. All our medical appoitments are done at Kunsan AB,no medical facilities here, our MPF is at Osan(3.5 hour drive)So we put in alot of rode time for military appoitments. All in all there are things to do you just have to find someone who wants to explore outside the gate. |
