New guy!

Hello!

My name is Dane Turner. I am from Toledo, Ohio & was stationed at KAB from 95 - 96 w/ the 8th SPS, Wolfpack Defenders. I loved my tour at the "Kun."

After Kunsan I got cursed w/ orders to one of the arm pits of the world (you think Kunsan is bad, lol) & now reside outside Columbus AFB, Mississippi.

Well, that's about it. I look forward to talking to y'all & am really glad I came across this site!

Re: New guy!

Got to KAB in Aug 95 as a Airman Basic. Yep, KAB was my 1st base! I loved it. I lived in 1303 most of my tour & was w/ the 8th SPS, Wolfpack Defenders. A-Flight (HUA!). lol.

Since I was an Air Baby I spent most of my time at the main gate, back gate, ammo gate or on the flight line gate, which suited me just fine b/c on patrol you have to do a lot of b...h work, which I don't like. Plus, I have more of a "guard dog" personality & I liked guarding "my people" better than riding around on patrol doing other ppl's busy work. I made some friends w/ the ROKAF guys too, which was cool.

I normally worked days but I did work a few nights & had the pleasure of checking the "vomit comet" coming in from A-Town. Fun.

Of course as an SP we trained almost monthly, so I got to work w/ the grenade launchers, Mark-19s, work riot control, ride in 113s, drop mortars, etc. all of which I thought was great.

I also worked as an auxillary for town patrol a few times as well. I don't smoke or drink, so I didn't go to A-Town as much as some others did, plus I am a female so A-Town didn't have a big attraction to me, although I did go down there to eat & hang out w/ friends. Boy, there was this place that made some awesome bulgogi (sp?). I have not found one place in the States that can even begin to compare. I miss that place! (tummy rumbling!)

My big thing was to save my money & go to Osan every now & again & buy some things. I had blankets, sweatshirts, flags, etc. almost all of which my spouse lost.

Since I was a saver & didn't spend all my money on the lures of A-Town I had $10,000 saved up by the time my tour ended. I thought that was a pretty nice feat for a 20 y/o kid. Too bad its all gone now.

All in all I loved my tour at the Kun & even tried to extend, but I couldn't. I tried even harder to extend once I fould out I was being shipped to Columbus AFB, MS. but it just wasn't in the cards. I was Mississippi bound.

As soon as I got to CAFB I put in to go back to KAB. Boy, they got offended at that. Oh well, what can ya do?

But no matter where I go or what I do, my tour at the Kun will be close to my heart & I will always consider myself a Wolfpacker forever!

Hi Dane,

I'm new to the forum as well. I was down in Kunsan in 96 (or was it 97?) for Foal Eagle as an SF evaluator. After about an hour of being there, I was so glad I was stationed at Osan. Just kidding...

Take care!

Re: New guy!

Mike: No, no stories - I wasn't a real wild child.

bvm: Yeah, good ol' Foal Eagle. I know a lot of the Osan ppl didn't like Kunsan b/c we didn't have a lot of the niceties y'all had. But it made us a tighter group & I must say that if I had to do it all over again I'd still choose Kunsan hands down!

I'll agree, especially in the SF community. Those Wolfpack SF guys always hung out together in their hooch...

Re: New guy!

Yeah, we did. I think they called it "B-Town." When I was there it was our Mobile Reserve building. They ended up closing it down b/c it was taking too much $$$ away from the NCO club. It didn't really work tho b/c then we just partied in our cops-only dorms. Same effect, different building. Go figure. lol.
