hello PCSing inf Feb
hey everyone, ill be PCSing in feb to osan and just wanted to ask a few questions bout the region. this is my 1st tour overseas and im not quite familiar with it specially since this is an unnacompanied one.
1. hows the transportaion up there? i know i cant have a pov so does everyone just walks to work or are there like buses on base? and how bout to seoul (so excited about being able to go to seoul on uncles sams dime!!), trains? buses? in english, korean, both? 2. what are juicy girls? my co workers keep warning me but they wont tell me, they just say ill know when i see em.... 3. phone service? is there a local/long distance company? and would it be a better deal using skype than getting a phone over there? skype kinda sucks here but then again my dsl connection not the greatest (i heard korea has a great broadband network) 4. recreation? snowboarding? skiin? rock climbing? any of these available ? 5. electronics, i was planning on bringing some of my stuff but i think they probably wont work cus of diff voltage over there. should i just buy some of it over there, like a tv dvd player and such? those r my main concers for now, im sure more will pop as i think of them. again just happy to get out of the states and travel a bit. got my ramstein follow on and pretty much psyched out ^_^ thanks in advance for any helpful answers |

Welcome to the site. 1. Alot of people use local transportation to get back and forth from Osan to Seoul. Bus, train, post bus or taxi. On post get a good bike. 2. HOOKERS basically, don't get caught with them. If they ask yo for a juice don't buy it. 3. I use vonage. Phone cards and cells phones are very cheap here and a very good to call the states. I can get a $10 card and call the states for almost 3 hrs on a $10 card. 4. Yes all that is here. 5. Don't worry about the voltage difference. If you live on base it is 110. If you happen to get off base just ask for a 110 convertor. So bring what you want.

Welcome to the site!
Juicy girls are not always hookers. In many ways they are worse! They will milk you of your money and you get no sex. Mike

Re: hello PCSing inf Feb
I would recommend getting some type of VoIP to use while you are here. We have Vonage that we use to call the states. Like Chuck said, you can get some good calling cards here to call the US but Vonage really helps your family and friends back home to be able to call you. We also have a cell phone here. Personally, I think the cell phone plans here suck compared to the US. You just have to be careful how much you talk. There are two types of cell phones. The contract phone where you pay so much a month for so many weekday minutes and so many weekend minutes. There's no such thing as free mobile to mobile, nights and weekends or rollover minutes. Weekday and weekend minutes are separate. You can go over on one and not the other. The other type of cell phone is a card phone. You buy a card with minutes and then register the card to your phone. All cell phones have free incoming calls. You can get a landline if you want. We looked into it but thought it wasn't worth the money. You pay I think a $50 installation fee. The monthly fee is cheap, something like $5-10. But, you have to pay per minute every time you make a call. I can't remember how much per minute.
Osan does have a base bus. I've only been on it once, so I don't know the route or how long it takes to get around base there. A bike would probably be a good investment because the buses can be sloooow. Public transportation is great. It's a little hard to figure out the local city bus routes because I don't think they have any printed in English. Osan has a metro nearby that takes about 20 minutes to walk to or a $2 cab ride. Once you get on the metro you can go anywhere in the Seoul area for less than $2.00. |

Some juicy girls are whores... but if your only reason is because you buy them a drink to sit with you and don't get any sex I think you just described most the girls in the states that go clubin...

You'll wait forever for the bus on base. Taxi or just hitch a ride with someone who can have a car. LOL. Osan is a walking base, meaning you can get anywhere on foot (might take a bit of time though). To go to Seoul, I just take the bus from here to Yongsan. It is closed to $5 one way. You can also take the metro, line #4 and it will stop in Yongsan station (no need to transfer). The train is about half the price of a bus ticket on base. But it does get crowded and you will probably be standing, and it takes a bit more time than the bus.2. what are juicy girls? my co workers keep warning me but they wont tell me, they just say ill know when i see em.... I think the drink only cost $10 though. I haven't bought one lol.3. phone service? is there a local/long distance company? and would it be a better deal using skype than getting a phone over there? skype kinda sucks here but then again my dsl connection not the greatest (i heard korea has a great broadband network) If you call back to the States a lot, get Vonage or some VoIP phone. The service here is very poor, and they'll suck you dry. I have a cell phone service plan. For about $50 a month, I get 250 minutes to use in Korea and unlimited call back to the US. Remember, that incoming call is free and doesn't count toward your minutes. Since it is like a Nextel service, I can also do private message with my friends who has the same service for free too. The only draw back to that is I have to pay about $200 for my phone (that is the cheapest one too). My recommendation is just to get the DSL service on base and nothing else.4. recreation? snowboarding? skiin? rock climbing? any of these available ? 5. electronics, i was planning on bringing some of my stuff but i think they probably wont work cus of diff voltage over there. should i just buy some of it over there, like a tv dvd player and such? Bring, bring, bring!!! Don't worry about the voltage difference. Most electronic equipment can handle between 110-240 volts. If the plug doesn't fit, you just get a cheap $1 adaptor. On base, it is 110V (w/ regular US outlets); offbase it is 220V. Electronics are more expensive off-base. Price for electronics at the BX are probably not the best. So just bring what you have. However, I think there are weight or size limitation on what you can bring with you. 32" tv is no big deal, but 60" might be a problem. Just check. |
