Smile New to forum

Hi, Mike

I am new in this forum,
and I am interested in korean culture as well as some other questions regarding expat life in korea.

My first question is, the US base in korea, employs a lot of people, and
and the military personnel that is stationed in korea, these people are one very group of lucky people, right?

Since there is really no war going on in Korea since 1950s, are there military persons who have lived all their life in the base? What a good life must be:
stable job (what kind of job, what to do ?? if there is no war), steady income, good retirement benefits, just enjoy life?
Do you think this is a fair assumption?

There is also a base in japan, and I knew a guy living there, and what a good life he had, nothing to do, and he married a japanese woman.

So, suppose someone in usa is thinking to enlist into the military, can he/she choose to serve in either korea or japan?

THanks,
jinny

Haha don't worry ! You can change through the training.
If you are enlist into the military, you just tell like this to your training teacher;
" Yes, Sir ! "
And You should not tell him anything else.
Only this, " Yes, Sir ! " It's very important.
If you want to be a good soldier, you have to practice it.
Are you ready ? so, say it " Yes, Sir ! "
ok....good job

And my name is Soo-Hyun. I work as a Internet security engineer here and I'm a columnist of here.
I live in Seoul. BTW, did you born in America ? or your parents Korean ?

Re: New to forum

I'm not sure if the only reason joining the military to get stationed in Korea is a good one. You might regret it and enlisting in the military is not something you can just join up and then quit when your tired of it. Plus, you said it yourself in your post that the military lifestyle wouldn't suit you and that you prefer to designing jeans. It sounds like you'll be doing something definitely not in that job range in the military.

However, if your really good at what you do, you could look into working possibly in the fashion industry in Korea. I have no idea how you would do this but I personally believe you'll be happier doing what you like to do.

By anychance, do you work for AG? I was in California in November and picked up two pairs of Adriano Goldscmich (was it) jeans and found out that the owner is Korean.

Good Luck.

Cool Re: New to forum

Welcome Jenny! Military guys will answer your questions happily after they find your photo!
It may appear to you that, since there is no war for 50 years, that the life here is easy. The Korean War never ended, we are under armistice conditions. (Temporary suspension of hostilities by agreement between the opponents.) The possibility of resumtion of fighting is always there. All military continue to train to fight, and keep physically fit. Training and war games can be a full time job, trust me. Some of us are sent to where other wars are, such as Iraq. So it is not all fun. We do have enjoyable times, of course, and nearly all the conveniences of home. Being in the Far East makes it convenient to visit exotic places. I was in Japan a few months ago, and am planning to visit China soon.
