Joint-Spouse/Command Sponsored

Hi everyone. New to the board and had a few questions. Just heard my wife and I might be heading to Osan in about 8 months (command sponsored and joint spouse). Does anyone know when the new towers are supposed to open up and how hard it will be to get in? We will have two kids when we get there (4 and 1) and we figured the towers would be the best place to live if they are going to be open.

Also, has anyone done the CS/JS assignment thing at Osan? I was there '97-'98 but I'm not sure how this one will work. Any words of advice? Thanks.

Welcome to the board....

What do you mean Joint Spouse? Are you dual military? If you are dual military then you will have Joint Domicile. Same benefits as CS.

Sorry cannot help you with the housing issue. Read the NCS thread in the military section that will explain alot about the housing on Osan.

Also check out USFK REG 614-1. It tells you exactally what you need to process your paperwork.

Re: Joint-Spouse/Command Sponsored

Something else that you need to be keenly aware of. Concurrent travel of dependents to Osan is currently restricted. You must have prior approval to bring them before securing housing. The towers are not going to open until next year and you will likely end up having to live off base if you are arriving before then. The General just talked about the whole Mustang Valley Village deal at the town hall meeting tonight and I would tell you that things are still up in the air there.

Do your homework before you pack the kids up and move them here. I highly recommend that you contact your gaining unit and discuss the issue with your gaining supervisor and/or first sergeant.

People will tell you that they brought their dependents with them, but concurrent travel is indeed restricted. The Gen even mentioned that tonight.

If they are joint domicile then they really don't have a choice. Both military with kids going to the same spot. What do you want them to do?

I'm sure the Gen. was talking about people who were NCS and brought their dependants with them.

Actually, no, dameeun's right on this one, chuck, I was there...and the concurrent travel is currently suspended for *all* CS coming to Osan..

With being a dual military family, something might be able to be worked out, an exception, perhaps, or staggered RNLTD, or perhaps working with you if there's an availabilty in the one tower currently completed, but as of right now, concurrent travel for CS is restricted until the housing situation is worked out.

The new housing towers should be opening in February 08, and April 08, if things go according to the current schedule, and the winter weather doesn't cause any more delays.

All housing matters are very much up in the air for the time being due to the unique situation going on with MVV, so it's very hard to tell how things will go.

Hope this helps..

Dee :)

Can you explain what concurrent travel is? Does it mean the military will pay for your entire family to fly on the same flight here? What is the AF doing? Paying for the military member to fly here first but making the rest of the family wait until housing is open before they will pay to fly the rest of the family here?

Sorry Dee, As much as we have agreed in the past I have to disagree. Your Post General does not cut orders for personel coming here. Does he have a MAJOR say in WHO comes over here, yes he does.

When it is all said and done, we can argue till we are blue in the face about who can come over and who cannot....

The big thing here is they are/will be joint domicile before they get here, (at least they should be IAW USFK reg 614-1) If they are dual military how can you break them up? IAW all the regulations?

I don't want to hear well that is the way it goes.....BS flag is out on that ......

Concurrent travel is when a family arrives at a duty station at the same time, on the same flight, paid for by the military. I don't have specifics here, but I'd hazard a guess here to say that 90% of PCS moves in the AF are concurrent travel.

-However- when certain extinuating circumstances prevail, upon the recommendation of the person in charge of a base, usually due to an unforeseen incident that is affecting housing, etc, the military/AF may issue a Non-concurrent travel order which means that yes, the military member has to show up, the AF pays for their flight over, and the family can come over on the AF's bill at a later date, after whatever requirements that are needed can be met, whether it's as in this case, the member has to secure housing first, or something else.

In the recent past, this happened at Keesler in Biloxi , after Hurricane Katrina.
The current non-concurrent travel order is in place here at Osan due to the situation with the impending closing of MVV. With the situation of having to displace 35 families that are already here and *in* housing, and just simply not having anywhere to put these folks who are coming in, from the way it was explained (and Dameeun, correct me on this) it's more or less a matter of just common sense, it'd be kinda silly to bring in more people when you don't have enough housing for those that are already here.

This situation , as it's been explained, should be temporary, and the non-concurrent travel order should be rescinded after the new towers are open, and housing is available for everyone again.

Dee :)
