My name is Jesse I. Diaz (Civilian) and will be coming to Osan, Korea in November and will work for Services. I just wanted to know if there are any things that I may need to know or if I should bring anything with me. I have a small car and wanted to bring it with me- Is that a wise choice? What are good areas to live at and is better to get an apartment, villa or share with other people? Any information that anyone may give me would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Hello Everyone
Welcome Jesse, Your questions will be answered.
If you can afford to sell your car and buy a beater over here I would do that. I bought a car for $1000 and it is pretty good shape go to Seoul all the time. How you want to live is up to you. I'm sure yuo can get a nice APT over here for what you will be paid. Most everything can be bought over here that is needed as long as you don't mind used stuff. Bring the basics to get buy for a few weeks and then start hitting the thrift shops. Again welcome, and ask away. You'll love it over here. Chuck

Re: Hello Everyone
I have a 2005 Scion Xb and was told that was the perfect car to bring with me because it fits almost anywhere. I am shipping all my furniture over and wondered also how much is it to have clothes made for ones self and how fast that is done. Do they also make shoes and where is the place to get deals on clothes and furniture? I have soooo many questions and also wondered how expensive is it to have a person to clean your house and run a few errands for you? Like grocery shopping and picking up dry cleaning and what not?

The scion should be fine. Clothes can be made at almost any place that sells clothes, depening on how backed up they are and "what" you want made will depend on how much you pay. Get to know a certian shop and continue to go there and become friends and the price will rop over time. Also being the First customer of the day will get you a bargan Yes the make shoes also, bring in a picture of what you want and they will measure your feet. You'll have to ask your landlord if they have a person who cleans houses (downtown only not on base) and i'm sure they will take care of you. As for picking up something, that will depend on how much your willing to pay....

Re: Hello Everyone
I have a cleaning lady and it cost me 50,000 won a week. She's very good and she's a real nice lady :) She doesn't run errands for us though so I don't know how much more that would cost.
Just something I have noticed andprobably a good option for you since you have a car. Outside the ROK gate is much cleaner and prettier to look at than out the main gate. I've heard the apartments out the ROK gate are bigger to. Downtown and the rest of Songtan are out the main gate and it is fairly noisey and grass and other such greenery are sparce. |

What exactly does the cleaning lady do for you.
How much are the apartments outside the ROK gate and is it a safe area for Americans, just asking since I do not know much about Korea. The two people I do know that were there a few years ago were Dale and Brian and they both worked for Services as I will. They have nothing but great things to say about Korea. I am really looking forward to going over and having a great time and being able to go to Seoul and Thailand and Australia. Thanks for the information and if anybody you know has information on apartments or homes please let me know. Quote:

I've HEARD that the places out the ROK gate are bigger because they are newer, and cheaper since it's kind of away from everything. I don't know for sure. I assume it's as safe as living outside the main gate, which I have never had a problem and feel fairly safe. |

Re: Hello Everyone
So what or does anyone have pics of apartments and the costs. I have furniture so I don't need a furnished apartment or home. If I am bringing my own computer will there be a plug for it? What is there to do in Osan and how far away is Seoul? I still have a lot of questions. How hard is it to drive in Korea and do I keep my American insurance or do I get insurance there for my car?
