Cool Countdown to fun in Korea

Hello Korea!
I will be PCSing to Kunsan AB within 3months
I'm excited & Looking foward to having a great time and making new friends. I hear Korea is a big party town and Im looking to partake in all the fun and excitment Korea has to offer. Of course not at the expense of my career like some people who take things to far. Everything in life is best in moderation :)
I just hope my year doesnt fly to fast.

Yea, Im expecting a lot of work ahead of me and training but for the opportunity to see Asia its all worth it. I have been to many countries in Europe, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what Asia has to offer.
I greatly admire Asian heritage and ancient traditions that still live on to this day. Im also looking forward to learning the language, hopefully its not to complicated to learn in a year.

Welcome to the site airfoxx!

You will enjoy Korea. Kunsan is away from the major cities, but the people stationed at Kunsan are usually a much closer group. If I remember correctly, you are not aloud to bring family to Kunsan, so the squadrons seem to have more functions.

Hopefully this forum will help you gain some friends before you arrive Korea. Feel free to ask any questions.

Mike

Re: Countdown to fun in Korea

Welcome to the Forum. I lived in the city of Kunsan for 1 year. Not an expert, but know a little aabout it. Kunsan has been an international city for much of it's history, being a seaport city. So, the Korean people living in Kunsan are a little more international in their thinking.
Kunsan sits on a large bay, so there are many, many places in the city where you can take photos. Ships from many different countries port there. And usually, except for this last week, the hurricanes hit the other side of Korea. This one went right over Kunsan.
Kunsan AFB is smaller than Osan, but I think the one writer was right when he said that Kunsan airmen/women are a tighter group.
All of Korea is a busride/trainride away from wherever you happen to be. Excellant transportation system. And relatively cheap.
You can bring your dependents here, but you will pay the bills, with some help from the government. Kunsan does have a small commissary, but there are military buses between Kunsan and Osan weekly.
You mentioned the older cultures, and being interested in them. Youu will be in a good place to go on many tours to see ancient ruins and/or very old Buddhist temple sites. Korea dates back to 2233 B.C. An old civilization, with some characteristics all of their own.
Good for you, wanting to do a good job while here. Some get bogged down in the party scene, and end up with a shortened career. Keep you focus on what's important. You'll find plenty of time for the extras. Commanders seem aware of where they and their troops are, and try to work in as many extras as they can, and still accomplish the mission.
Anticipate a great time, and you'll have one. Don't let the ones with the bad attitudes change yours. Stay with the ones who are doing well, and staying out of trouble. You'll do fine. Have a great year. Keep in touch. Any questions can be addressed here on the forum, or keep your chain of command involved in your life.
