Re: New to OSAN
Always good to see a brother on line. Were you in Lord of the Rings also?
You will fit in fine at Osan. Is this your first trip? |

Re: New to OSAN
Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and actually, new to forums altogether. I heard about the site on Google. I'm in the process of applying for jobs at Osan base and I'm interested in getting a feel for what the area and South Korea is like. I'll be coming (hopefully) with my three children, ages 10, 7, and 7. Yes! Twin BOYS!! So, I'm really interested in learning about the area and what's available for children. I'm applying for jobs as a civilian with the Army and Air Force. I did my time with the Army years ago, but have idea what it's like working for the military as a civilian. Any advice on which branch may be better to work for? Hopefully I'll be able to figure out how to check replys and stay in touch. AZRA |

You are going to get varied opinions. I'll be first. I am retired AF, and have been an AF and an Army Civilian. I've been with the government for over 35 years. If you have a choice, go AF. But if you want facilities that are best for a family, and school age children, get a job in Seoul. Most jobs are Army, but AF, Navy and Marines are here at Yongsan (Seoul) also. . We are 60 minutes from Osan by bus. Osan is growing, and has an excellent BX and a commissary now, but is in flux for many reasons. The new construction at Camp Humphreys, (Formerly Pyongtaek Air Force Base) will be incomplete for an undetermined time,, and Army students are overflowing to Osan.
If you send me a PM, (Click " User CP" above in the darker Blue field, and send to " Mr. Joe"'),telling me what you might qualify for, I may be able to give some tips. |

Re: New to OSAN
Hi Mr. Joe,
I'm going to try this again. I appear to be quite hopeless in the posting process. I typed up a nice, thorough reply and thank-you and it's lost somewhere. Please have patience with me. I'm about to send in my applications on jobsUSA, just waiting for transcripts to come in. I'm a licensed Social Worker and I'm applying for Social Work positions with the Army and Sexual Assault Resonse and Prevention positions with the Air Force. I'm mostly interested in getting information about basics, like housing and education for the children. Is the housing allowance generally enough or do you usually have to add more? What are living expenses like? I'm trying to figure out what kind of salary I'll need to make it. I've also looked into Azores, Guam and Hawaii. What are your thoughts on those locations? I've visited Vietnam a couple of times and really love it there. It looks like South Korea is going to be the closest in terms of culture and proximity, so I really hope I can get hired there. Thanks so much for your kind reply. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this forum. It's hard to remember how we all managed before the internet. Looking forward to hearing from you and thanks again. AZRA |
