I'm going to repost a blog entry below this and add a little here at the top.
This section of the Forums hasn't gotten more than 2 posters so far and most of the posts get about a dozen viewers. No big suprise - it's new and perhaps not something the USFK-related viewers here are terribly interested in. Whatever the case, you have to build readership and authorship on an internet forum....and this is new. But, this week in Washington DC --- ALL ---- I mean A-L-L --- of the big names and big time orgs related to North Korean Human Rights are in the biggest geopolitical center of the universe. It is NKHR Week and this year it is hosted in the United States - in our capital - and some of it going on in the halls of Congress. And the US (and world) media has ----- ------- done absolutely jack-shit with it... I am stunned. A documentary like Inside North Korea recently, and just like with Undercover in the Secret State --- they come out --- and there is a buzz about it. People in the media and thorugh the media are shocked ---- shocked watching one of the most compelling stories on the earth ---- a Holocaust in Demented Disney World right in front of our eyes. I mean - North Korea makes things like the book Animal Farm or 1984 look like instruction manuels!!! But, then where does that concern go? I can understand with regular people. They don't have the time to devote to this stuff, and it is depressing. But, things like the North Korea Human Rights Week are kinda the job of the media, no? Anyway, here is my blog post: Have I gone completely mental? I feel like I used to as a kid when taking a math or science test - when I knew the answer to the problem was in my head, I knew I could do it, but it was just blocked and I was, as Koreans would say, a stone head… Somewhat stunned I could not find a single text article on CNN, Fox News, or ABC News on the North Korea Human Rights Week being held in our own nation’s capital, I could’t get it out of my head, so I went to Google News Search. Except for The Daily North Korea and some news org in New Zealand, not much…. Here is One and Two screen shots of the results. With IExplorer 7 you should be able to maginfy them to view them. ….unable to believe what I was seeing (or more correctly - not seeing) I went to the New York Times and Washington Post sites to search. Nothing. (I will post links to the images of that search at the end of this message) I must have completely flipped my ever loving rocker…. What am I not getting? The ****ers at the Washington Post would probably have to drive around some of the stuff going on so far this week in DC….!!! What am I not getting? It must be my brain that is malfunctioning right? There has to be coverage of the events of Mon-Wed, right? Or, I’ve dreamed up the whole NKHR Week stuff and posting about it at other blogs, right? (I recently watched the French film The Science of Sleep - and think maybe I’m gone mental and taken over the life of the main character). Three - Four - Five |

Re: Stunned --- Utterly...
It does make one wonder about the news as if they think it will not play well or get good viewership etc. It is all about the ratings not the content of the news show they truely do not care about real new case in point Anna Nichole Smith case. We are still listening to that and frankly I never did and still don't care.

I'll give a shout out to Greta Van Susteren. Not for her coverage of the NKHR Week. I don't know if she has even done any.
But, back in 2002, during the anti-US orgy in South Korea, there were 2 or 3 expats in the early version of the K-blogsphere who were increasingly active in sending emails to major US media outlets begging them to get a clue about what was going on in Korea. A few websites and forums opened up as part of this effort as it began increasingly clear the US media couldn't give a *&^&. My anti-US/USFK culture in Korean society website was a direct result of that media ignorance. But, Van Susteren, for whatever reason, did coverage of the situation in Korea months before anybody else got a clue. And - I mean - she also showed an understanding of it. She had guests on and they would attempt to stick to North Korea issues - or - give the standard line that "Most Koreans want US troops to stay......It's just a radical, vocal minority - yada yada yada" but she would usually, and quickly ask questions to get them to focus on South Korea & its anti-US activities. And her speciality is US law......go figure.. When I saw this, I started sending her links to sites, images, video clips, and articles to her about events. And she actually answered a few of those emails. So, even though that was 4 years ago - I'm going to give her kudos for it again... |

Re: Stunned --- Utterly...
She is very good in areas that she has knowledge, unlike other reporters she is a evidence before conclusion person that comes from her law background but in my opinion gives more credence to her reports.

Re: Stunned --- Utterly...
The other issue this week is that the North Korean human rights groups are being drowned out just like any other issue in America by the Iraq debate. Nothing else matters except Iraq. Basically the media and the politicians do not care if Kim Jong-il is starving and killing hundreds of thousands. They are more concerned with demagoguing the Iraq issue to increase their own political power. If Bush, Haliburton, Cheney, etc. could some how be blamed for the suffering and deaths in North Korea than the media and politicians would care.

Re: Stunned --- Utterly...
That is because there is no political capital in talking about North Korea. Even the debate last night All I heard was bash the war policy and nothing about real issues like minimum wage, Social Security, improving the federal trans system, addressing real problems of inaquacy in health care, (ie pay a lot of money for very little care)

Re: Stunned --- Utterly...
I snidely commented somewhere yesterday that --- if the US had troops in either North Korea or China, you'd hear tons out of the press, Hollywood, academia, and politicians about human rights abuses North Korean refugees face both inside North Korea and in hiding in China.
But, later on, I realized ----- that statement isn't as snide as I thought at the time. There is unfortunately a good bit of truth in it.... |

I've got to agree, there are too many other things going on that will sell more newspapers. Imas got canned for repeating what his producer said, Rosie
O'Donnell got fired yesterday for saying the f word and saying "Eat me" while grabbing her private part,on TV referring to a bald headed Donald Trump. The war, the presidential hopefuls, and the deceased Blonde who's baby will inherit millions... At times like this few people consider it important if ALL North Koreans starve to death! You can drum up much more sympathy for the Africans who are dying of self-inflicted aids. Complaining about human rights generally does no good unless someone listens who can and is willing do something about it. Remember, we live in times when you can't OFFEND ANYONE!! |

Re: Stunned --- Utterly...
I am working on a CD compilation of the You Tube videos I've cut recently along with some documents available on the internet, refugee stories, images, and some other stuff.
I'm hoping to use it as a "chain letter" sending it out with the hopes individuals will copy it (or after viewing it) pass it on to at least one other person. I'll upload it as an archive file as well for anyone to download, unpack, and burn ---- and/or ---- download and email to others as an attachment. |
