Find Any Internet Alternatives (like wireless)?
Everyone knows they are getting gouged if they live on base for broadband. My question is, does anyone know of a good high-speed wireless provider that will reach to the base? I’m kinda close to the front gate so I’m thinking I might have a chance. If I can get 1 MB per sec I’d be happy to jump ship from SSRT. Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: Find Any Internet Alternatives (like wireless)?
Anybody thought about teaming up with their suite mates? It would be pretty easy to set up a wireless router in your room and share the cost and bandwidth with the people on each side of you. Of course, you'd have to agree that any huge downloads would have to be done late at night, but that's pretty easy to set up. You could easily set it up to where nobody else but you and your partners have access to the bandwidth too. I don't get there until October, so I don't know what kind of speeds SSRT has, but most broadband is good enough to share with 3 or 4 computers at the same time if people aren't being total bandwidth hogs. Anyway, like I said, I'm not there yet and don't know the setup, but it's something to think about.

Re: Find Any Internet Alternatives (like wireless)?
If you are going to share wireless with your roomie/suitemate make sure that you have in encrypted. Or, if you want to share it with your suitemate you are better off just running a LAN cable between your rooms, just get like 50ft of cable for 5 bucks at the BX, its more reliable than wireless anyways. In response to the initial post, I dunno if you can get wireless from off base on base, my guess is that it is probabley possible but I would not recommended it. I don't think the wireless in Songtan is all that great anyways. Sadly SSRT does run a monopoly on the internet @ Osan and I heard even bigger BS that they have taken away the ability to use voIP (Vonage, for you layman =p) on thier service. That really sucks, I would be throwing a fit to AAFES about that one, I mean sure it is "technically" against Vonages' terms to use the phone outside of the USA, but they kind of don't mind US servicemembers abroad using the service. BESIDES, aren't US military installations overseas considered US SOIL!? I think there is grounds for a class-action there if enough smoke gets put out over this matter. No way to tell.

Welcome djmikeyt! Are you a real DJ?
You are most likely out of luck with a paid service. I use T-Mobile's Hotspot service here, but I don't think Koreans have a service like this in Songtan. I know that Seoul is much more broadband friendly. They are even looking at service for their trains! I would say Korea is #1 in broadband, but behind in wireless. For instance, when I search for wireless connections here in Hawaii I generally see 5-10 connections and 1-2 are unsecured. In Korea I hardly saw any. I did find a few down the main strip in Songtan at one of the coffee shops, but it was unsecured and weak. Good luck!

Yongsan has wireless in our snack bars and all PX cafeterias. From our office, we can see 7 or 8 connections. Talk to the BX at Osan and see if they will follow Yongsan's lead. Couldn't hurt.
Oh, I should mention to command sponsored folks- My landlord agreed to pay my TV cable AND my internet connection, plus 4 bottles of water per month. Again, it never hurts to ask. After all, we do pay him lots of rent! Last edited by Mr. Joe : 07-31-2006 at 08:12 PM. |

Re: Find Any Internet Alternatives (like wireless)?
When I had SSRT on post I was getting 100KBS what ever that means? When I would download it varied? Sometime I would DL 100MB in a few minutes other times it would take days.
Down town I still connect at 100KBS but the DL speed seems to be MUCH quicker. Mr. Joe, the cable, water, internet here at Camp Humphreys seem to be the norm that the landlord pays if you are CS or NCS. EDIT I mean I connect at 100mbps on and off post.
