Good or bad places to live

Hi all!

Do you guys have any suggestions on apartments or houses near Osan? It's just going to be me, so I don't need anything too big. I'd love to have a large swimming pool, a jacuzzi in the master bedroom, a view of the mountains, and a bar that's open 24 hours right down the hallway. Yeah...right. Reality is that I'm a pretty simple guy and just need some space for me and my music. I would rather get a bit off the beaten path and get something decent while getting to enjoy the culture. I am going to be on foot or bike, so anything more than 3 miles out is pushing it. If you guys have any words on places to avoid, that would really be helpful too. If you do have a negative, please expain why. Also, there's one main realty place on these forums that shows places to live, but has anyone found others on the net? Not that I don't like the one that Mike is advertising, but I do like to do some comparison shopping. Anyway, I know it's a lot to ask, but I really do appreciate the help!

Thanks!
Joe

Re: Good or bad places to live

Of the five different places I lived in Songtan I liked the back side of hill 180 the best. Someone told me they have closed down the 180 gate since I was there, if so, it is still only a five minute walk or a couple minute by bike back over to the main gate. Tell the housing office to show you some places there. It is off the beaten path but close enough to walk down to the pubs or main gate. The last place I lived in there was just down the hill from the 180 gate and it was the second floor of a house. There was a Buddist temple across the street on the hill, so there was good scenery, sitting out on the patio, instead of looking at just more buildings.

Thanks Turk! I'll take a look around there today on the web while I'm at work. Not that I would do that type of things at work...

I've seen many references to Hill 180 so far. Where is it?

Since, I believe, the 180 gate is now closed, (not sure) to get to the civilian side outside the base, turn right out of the main gate and just keep going, straight up the hill and over. You will get to the area I'm talking about. Its kind of difficult to describe how to get to it from on the base without disclosing some probable security issues. I guess you could say it is the hill you can travel up behind the base gym. Things have changed somewhat since I was there last due to some construction so I'm not sure how it changed the road there.

Re: Good or bad places to live

One place I lived there was take a left out the main gate and follow that road around which follows the base permitor (sp?) go down less than 1/2 mile and there are many apts/houses back there for rent. Not a bad area and not to far from the bars etc... easy walking distance even in the snow, some small hills but nothing major. The place i lived was a pink building called songtan apts.
The landlady was an old mamasan that always bent over skinny as a rail that worked at the dragon club.

Overall nice small place and never had any problems except when the drunk korean bargirls walked into my apt one night thinking they were at there place. But I wouldnt call that a problem !! lol

Re: Good or bad places to live

Yeah...I checked the forums, and I'm sure that I'll end up going with something on there. I WOULD like it if they put on their ads where the places are located. I'd like to know if something is near where Turk is talking about, or closer to where Chip is talking about. Great icon, by the way, Chip. Who knows...maybe they do put it in the ads where the places are located, and I'm just not familiar enough with Osan to recognize what it is. Either way, it's kinda coming down the wire for me and I'm getting a bit nervous. I'd like to at least have an idea of where to start looking when I get there and you guys have helped.

Thanks!
Joe

Does anyone know anything about Top Gun Village? It's one of the places on the USFK classifieds.

Thanks!

Re: Good or bad places to live

Just a small update for you guys and gals...I contacted the realty agency that Mike loves so much on his classifieds section and they've seem pretty nice. I guess things change really fast over there because of the turnover, so the classifieds aren't kept up quite as well as I thought they would be. Other than that, though, I'm definitely going to get in touch with them once I get there. Anybody else have any suggestions on areas to live or areas to stay away from?
Thanks!
Joe
