Your favorite 500lbs
This is a spin off from a previous thread, but I think it would be helpful for me, and others, if those currently in Korea listed their 500 lb totals.
Here is my list so far, its very light right now since I'm still in the planning stage. The weights I got mostly from Amazon.com to give a ballpark ship weight. Just for reference, my wife and I are doing the NCS thing, so hopefully we will find a furnished apt when we arrive. Microwave - 33lbs 27" TV - 78 lbs 20" iMac - 31 lbs DVD player - 7 lbs printer - 12 lbs vaccum cleaner - 22 lbs ---------------------------- Total 183 lbs |

Re: Your favorite 500lbs
Great idea! I would save some weight by dropping off the vacuum cleaner. For those who are definitely going to live downtown, your heat will most likely come from the floor, hot water floor heat. Your floors will be linoleum over concrete. Best to take a small hard surface floor sweeper or just do what most do, sweep it.

Great advice on the Vaccum cleaner. So here is where I stand now.
Ship weight Progear Microwave Oven 33 20" iMac 31 27" toshiba tv 78 toshiba DVD player 7 printer 12 ------------------------------- Total = 130 lbs Can a printer be included in pro-gear too? Things I'm considering but haven't weighed yet - Bedding, Clothes, kitchen stuff. Any more ideas from everyone? I'm sure there are plenty of folks that still have their shipping inventory lists... |

Re: Your favorite 500lbs
Well...other than my progear stuff...here's my 500lbs favorites so far:
2 Stanton STR-80 Turntables (50lbs each) 1 Numark Mixer (15lbs) Korg Electribe MX Sound Processor (20lbs) 20 or so records (those are like big CDs for you youngins) Golf Clubs (maybe 20lbs?) And a bike (No Chuck...it's not a $900 bike...I'm not that good :-) See! Nowhere near 500lbs without all that computer stuff!

Re: Your favorite 500lbs
The vast majority of places you will find downtown don't have closets for clothes. Just walls, floors and ceilings. I'd take one or two of those portable closets, the ones that are made of metal/plastic tubes and can be taken apart.

Re: Your favorite 500lbs
Definitely bring your kitchen stuff. No one told me what to bring beforehand and I ended up spending lots of money on kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom stuff once I got over here.
This site is such a great resource! |

All you have to do is ask for closet's to be installed before you move in. If they don't install them then go to another person who will. I'm betting they will to get your money. Joe, not everyone needs a $900 bike. I just bought it becasue It was a great deal and you would not believe the difference between a $100 bike and mine. I also do alot of riding, just from home to work and around base. My daily mileage is around 10-15 miles per day. Your printer can also be in your PRO gear. You print stuff for the AF right? Yea get rid of the vaccum. Pots and pans depending on where you go you can just go down to the local market and get all your pots and pans for around $30. Also go to wal-mart.com and get the all in one kitchen pack with knives, spoons, ladles and other things for $34 shipped. This is a great thread, keep it up everyone.

Re: Your favorite 500lbs
Another great idea on the Wal-Mart all in one box! This is really helping me focus our weight priorities.
What kind of furniture does the average Osan area apartment come with? Will I need to bring a computer desk? |

Re: Your favorite 500lbs
It looks by some of the adds on the USFK that there are some landlords who are providing some furniture and appliances in some of the SongTan dwellings now. That what previously unheard of. Typically, when you rented a place downtown, in the past, ( I left in 2000) all you got was floors, walls and ceilings. No Korean landlord provided any furniture, window coverings, closets or anything what-so-ever. Chucksnee says you can demand they put in a wardrobe closet but I think that depends on the grace of the landlord and how badly they need to find a tenant at the time. While I am sure things have changed somewhat, as evidenced by some of the available furnished places in these classifieds, I wouldn't count on it. Even though there may be some furnished places, thats not saying one will be available when you arrive and it can get expensive and take up a lot of time to try and get things you need over there. I have always found that it is best to take what you can there with you while you have the opportunity. Don't count on finding a place with much more than floors, walls and a ceiling.

Re: Your favorite 500lbs
And don't forget to pack the toilet paper on the top of your other items. It might be the first thing you need... :-)
