Re: Your favorite 500lbs

Turk, I never said DEMAND anything I said ASK....Second you continue to say "well back when I left" Guess what things change, I also left in 2000 and now i'm back and things have changed beyond your belief. I cannot believe how much things have changed.

It does depend on the landlord, but he knows how much he can get out of you (money wise) and if you ask him to furnish it a for a little more I'm sure he will do it. They do it all day long here at Camp Humphreys, my landlord even held my APT for over a month and let me move in a week prior to the lease date for free.

All you have to do is ask!

Re: Your favorite 500lbs

No need to get defensive dude. I did a total of ten years in Korea at different times from 82-2000. I'm just trying to think back on some of my experience to try and lend to the thread. Yeah, I may not be there today but that does not mean I'm not occasionally right. Just because you live there today you are not right 100 percent of the time though every thread you answer to makes one think you are an absolute know it all, so lighten up, there are others with great korean experiences out in the world that are willing to share them so that they might be of use to those who ask. There are few absolutes. have a beer, relax.

Re: Your favorite 500lbs

I have 20 months till I retire, I'm totally relaxed. I just don't like it when people quote me and say something that I did not say.

I answer (in almost every thread) becasue I do know alot about Korea, I know the regs BUT I have been wrong and I have admitted to it (look in the NCS thread).

You also have been correct on alot of things you said. When you have written something and I see that it is wrong, I say it. That is everyone not just you. There are alot of people on this board who have ALOT more experience than me in Korea, but Korea has changed ALOT since 2000.

Also, when you say "well when I was there 6 years ago" this is how it was. I'm sorry Turk but that holds nothing with me just becasue of the vast amout of changes that have occured in the last 6 years.

Either way, information that is put out on this board that helps alot of people, which is the purpose of this board.

Cool Re: Your favorite 500lbs

I don't recall recent mention of appliances power requirements.
I can only speak for Seoul-someone at Osan and other sites speak up- but...
If you are NCS or for whatever reason do NOT get On -Post housing, the electricity in Korea is 220 Volts AC.

If you have any Large appliance like a microwave, TV, IRON, etc. Be aware that in order to operate it, you may need a HEAVY DUTY downconverter for each appliance. Some Apartrment owners may provide two or three in our large goverment funded apartments, but you unfortunate folks who pay your own utilities and rent need to understand this.
I think it might be best to buy a 220 Microwave here for $60, or a 220 Iron. The PX doesn't normally have a 220 iron or 220 light bulbs, either. Nice new TV's with 110/220 are like $200-$300.

Here at Camp Humphreys. On post housing is standard 110V, just like the Barracks or the states.

The problem is the people who are not AUTHORISED to live off post. Then you have to deal with with what you have becasue you must pay for you utilities.

If you are authorised to live off post then you will go through an inspection, if your APT, house or where ever you are trying to move into does NOT have 110v then the inspector will not sign off on the inspection check list.

Other places may be different...

Re: Your favorite 500lbs

also be noted the 5000KVA downvoltage converters are NOT safe for 5000KVA. we personally had to go out and buy specials ones so we could get a ground so we have a real one. and its weight is 100bls or more...

Also be warned, TV tuners for your PC will not work in korea! as it will try and use your computer as a ground and you get the enjoyable sparky sparky, also you won't be able to get stereo with a US TV because the audio single is differnet then in the US. though you still get normal sound.

Re: Your favorite 500lbs

Well...I shipped my stuff today. Here's to hoping that it'll all get there in one functioning piece. I threw everything I could think of in the mix, and I'm still nowhere near 500lbs. It's amazing how much you can take when you don't have to factor your computer into the mix! The really cool part is that I have to delay my final outprocessing here for a couple of weeks, so my stuff might actually get there before I do! Yippie! See you guys soon!

Re: Your favorite 500lbs

A word of advice when shipping CDs and/or DVDs. Make sure the inventory list the exact number and if they are original or copies. CDs/DVDs seem to be the items that are lost/stolen most from UB shipments. Also don't have anything on your hard drive you would not want your commander to see. Occasionally customs shows up during delivery and reviews what you shipped; to include what is on your computer.
