Buying Camera Equipmet in Korea
Does anyone know if I can get good deals there on camera equipment? I am talking about Canon EOS and Nikons. Both are Digital SLRs.
Thanks for any info.

Not sure about downtown, alot of times it's better to buy on-post (someone may no better than me) so it will be the same cameras that you by where ever you are at.
Also check out (if you don't already know about it) www.pricewatch.com That is an amazing little website that checks all prices and gives you the cheapest price.

I'm sure someone will mention the Yongsan Electronics Market at some point. Personally, I hate shopping for electronics there, though. Too many saleman hound and pressure you at once since you have like a dozen camera stores all lined up in a row, side to side, and back to back.
I'd check online. There's a nice place online where I got my camera: Onecall. They ship priority mail; gets here in a week. Their service is great, too. |

Generally speaking, Koreans pay more for high quality electronics than Americans do - and this includes items manufactured in Korea.
Purchasing Japanese made electronics used to be damn near impossible 15 years ago. You can pretty much get whatever you want now, however, the taxes and tariffs that are added on really run the costs up. As chucksnee mentioned - the cheapest prices will almost always be online. And the PX will almost always be cheaper than off-post. And if you do find something at a cheaper price off-post the PX has a policy of matching any competitor's price. The advantage in the US is that you have to pay sales tax off-base - so if the PX matches the price - you can get it at the same price, but you don't have to pay the sales tax - so you get a very good deal. In Korea, there is no sales tax, so the price would be the same at the PX. The advantage is that if something happens to it - you can always take it back to the PX and they'll take it back - pretty much no questions asked. |
