OSAN 2 years NCS still bringing the wifey!!

This is my first post!!!

I signed up for it and got what I wished for, I'll be there for two years without a follow on.

My wife is going to be joining me for the two years that I'm there. I'm only an E-5 so it's on my own dime. I have it pretty easy since my wife was born and raised there and I'm 3/4 korean as well. We both have family and friends in the Osan Area.

I really only have one huge question.

My wife has her green card and used to be a Korean citizen, I'm a natural born american citizen. I know that when you go there as non command sponsor you have to have your kid off base in a Korean Hospital. I also know that I'll have to pay for the expences after the 30th week or so. But I'll get 75% of that back once I fill out and submit the paperwork. But the big question is what is my kid going to be? Is it going to be a Korean or American Citizen? ANYONE??

Re: OSAN 2 years NCS still bringing the wifey!!

Your future son or daughter would initally be a Korean citizen on the basis of being born on Korean soil to a Korean mother. You can apply for naturalization for your child on the basis of having an American father and a resident alien mother. In the end your child would end up with dual citizenship.

I was unaware of the policy of your wife having to have the baby off-base. Doesn't Osan have the facilities for delivery assuming it's a routine pregnancy? And, if there are complications couldn't your wife have the baby in the Yongson hospital?

My wife and I are hoping to start our family soon after arriving at Osan. If we can't have our baby on base, it might change our plans. I think my wife would go back to the states with family for her last few months and we would get back on tricare prime.

Welcome to the site, you and your wife will have a great time here.

Having the child, people have children here all the time. ON BASE!! They have the facilities and since your Military you should not have to pay for anything.

Re: OSAN 2 years NCS still bringing the wifey!!

Welcome PAKS2K!

I have a feeling you will be able to have your child on-base at little cost to you. Think in the military the military member pays like $30 for the food you eat while in the hospital, but I am not sure.

Hopefully, someone from the medical staff at Osan can post a reply.

Again, welcome to the site and enjoy your tour at Osan!

Mike

I just wanted to let you know that once you disenroll from Prime and enroll in Standard, you can't go back to Prime for a period of one year. The exception is if you are E4 or below.

nearlywild, can you show me this in the reg? My wife disenrolled from Prime to standard when she was over here in 1999. All it took was a piece of paper and she was back on prime, it took all of 1 day.

Just my opinion but that makes no sence?

It's amazing that so many people still think this. Sadly, it's not just armchair experts (most of whom haven't stepped foot in Korea in probably 20 years). This same information is often put out by senior NCOs and officers, relocation assistance personnel, stateside hospital staffs, etc., etc.

PAKS2K ~ I hope you get a chance to tell the person that told you this that they are wrong.

Re: OSAN 2 years NCS still bringing the wifey!!

This is the info that she said was given to her when she went to her initial briefing at Osan once she found out she was pregnant. She's also a NCS spouse. I guess I'll truly find out when I get there and start asking all the questions myself. I'll be sure they provide these things in writeing, but until then I guess me and the wife might still hold off. Although it sounds like it doesn't cost much to have the kid off base.

As long as my kid become an american citizen it's all good. I don't want the kid to have to join the Korean Army when he gets older.

Thanks for all the info!!

I had a budy and his wife decided to have their child downtown, I think it cost all of $700. That included the private room, (their is an option to have a room with others after the child is born which cost's less) the Dr. fee's, food and all expenses.

So your wife is here? You said she had her initial screening at Osan.

That still does not sound right.

Just like the dentist office said about my son (over the phone) that he cannot be seen on post. Well after going in and talking to them he has an appointment on the 17th of OCT on base.

Re: OSAN 2 years NCS still bringing the wifey!!

No the wife will be there middle of October. We don't have one on the way but we've been thinking about having one soon. It doesn't sound expensive if they truly don't pay 100% or let us have it on base. And since the kid will eventually be an Amercian Citizen i'm reallly not worried anymore.

Thanks for all the help. This website rocks!!
