Someone said that there is a walmart somewhere near songtan that you can get on the train here and end up there. Does anyone know where the walmart is?

I think it is in Suwon. I think you can get off at the Suwon train station and take a taxi. Hopefully, someone that knows 100% will post soon. You better hurry up! Wal-Mart is pulling out of Korea soon!

There are actually 2 wal-marts in Seoul. The first is in Seoul downtown somewhere and the other is along HWY 1 between Camp Humphreys and Seoul, it is on the right hand side as you go to Seoul.

As for looks it is Identical to any wal-mart that you go to now. They even have the little smiley face on the prices above the rack and everthing. All employees wear the little blue/red vests.

For what is in there is the same as any other American wal-mart except it is all Korean. Kinda like a super wal-mart just Korean.

Shopping

E-mart is just as cool and is located here in Songtan/Pyongtaek. Even cooler is The New Core Department Store!!! Ten stories of capatilistic bliss! Including food court and two floors of movie theaters! The parking garage is multi-level under the tower-shaped shopping center. It feels like your driving into a pit. I parked 4 floors under street level and there were more levels to go.

Oh, and they have a "leave your toddler at the playland and we will watch them for a few bucks while you shop" place too!

New Core is located near the Pyongtaek Police Station.

Cheers,
Chuck

Is it safe to leave your kids behind? Does anybody at the childcare speak English? Do they offer the parents a beeper like some resorts do? Have you tried it, Chuck? Did your kids feel okay? Yes, I'm a worrywart--drives my husband crazy!

Shame on you, jj! *G* Not a *gasp* worrywart! LOL :)

Don't feel bad, I'm the same way,and yes, I drive Richard crazy with it at times too!

Aric is a little out of that age range, so it wouldn't be something that would be practical for us.. (umm..unless they have one of the cool gyms that they have in McDonald's and all the other fast food places that we can -all- play in..! Yeah, I'm bad, a kid at heart! :)

Thanks for asking those questions, they're really good, and as parents, -especially- in a foreign land.. valid!

Now, here's a generic question.. given that concern, how safe is the area around Osan -for- children, in comparison with the states? Are there many cases of child abduction, etc? As I mentioned, I'm a worry wart anyway,so I'm hardly going to let my little one run wild in a foreign country... but it's always good to know.Being forewarned, after all, is being forearmed.

Dee :)

P.S. Just a little humorous aside, about kids running wild in Korea, about 3 years ago, an acquaintance of mine was on the peninsula with her kids (none of whom are especially noted for good behavior, one of whom, Jeremiah, is absolutely a little terror...) and when the initial trouble with the whole NK situation surfaced back then, our joke was.."Of course, there's trouble.. Jeremiah's there." Now, 3 years later, there's the current missile crisis thing going on..so we've updated the joke "Oh, crap! Now they've figured out where Jeremiah *lives*!"

Sorry, couldn't resist ! :)
