When will AAFES lower Taxi fares

This question was ask in the 28 Oct Stars and Stripes Letters the Editor.

". . . I wanted to find out how soon the Army and Air Force Exchange Service basic fare on taxi services here at Osan Air Base will be dropping back down. Back in April/May the price for the basic fare on a taxi was $1.80, but then it was raised to $2.30. AAFES stated the reason for the raised price was “the heightened cost of fuel.” Well, now that the price of gas has dropped by 50 cents a gallon, I’m sure that we will soon see these savings passed along to us. I was just wondering, when?"

Answer from AAFES"

When H--- freezes over!

Re: When will AAFES lower Taxi fares

Prices only go up with AAFES taxi services, I have NEVER heard of them going down regardless of their excuse for recent service price hikes.

The only way they will lower prices is if the people that use the taxi service boycott the service and demand it. Anyone interested in heading the boycott?

Re: When will AAFES lower Taxi fares

I just filed an ICE comment card about this issue. If we can get enough people to file ICE cards about this problem maybe we can get some results. I have done it in the past, but you have to request a reply. It works most of the time.

This was brought up during the last Town Hall meeting here at Humphreys and they flat out told us it wouldn't be dropped. They said that it wasn't just the the high gas prices that caused the price increase but "other factors", so it's going to stay the same.

Using ICE is a great way to work towards a solution. The comments are forwarded directly to the AAFES management.

I received a reply on the same day.

My main gripes with the AAFES cab service:

- Drivers ALWAYS try to take your change. If you ask for it back, they either mutter under their breath or call you "Cheap Charlie".

- The fare increase

- I know we're on an American installation, but I feel the currency should be accepted in both won and dollars.

It's funny yah know... around Korea the cab drivers give you back your change and keep a smile on their face (most of the time). On base it's a completely different beast. It seems they all woke up on the wrong side of the bed and the highlight of their day is to steal your change. Seems like any Korean ran business on or near an American installation creates a giant socioeconomic cluster#u*%.

I've never had a problem using won here on post. I usually just ask before I get in and the driver says that he will take it. I know that there are signs posted in the cabs saying cash only but the driver still took the won.

Re: When will AAFES lower Taxi fares

Yep...same here. Granted, I've only been here for 10 days so far, but I've taken cabs to a lot of places until I get acquainted with the base. I've only had one driver say he didn't want won, but he took it in the end. I've found that Nearlywild has the answer, though...if you ask them first, then they will usually say yes.

Re: When will AAFES lower Taxi fares

For myself, most of the time they just mutter under their breath when I hand them won instead. One cab driver absolutely refused to take my won, when he was offered a $100 bill instead he stared at me like I was crazy. We must have sat in silence looking at each other for 10 minutes until I just placed the won down in his seat and walked away.

Re: When will AAFES lower Taxi fares

Here's an e-mail conversation between the AAFES-GM and myself giving more direction on which avenues to go concerning the AAFES cab service:

Quote:
Mr. *OPSEC*, The Taxi service is an AAFES contract and we welcome all comments, as this gives us the opportunity to improve our services, When commenting on Taxi's, please include date and time and Taxi number IE O-55. This helps us identify the driver.

Mr. *OPSEC*,

Good evening. The ICE Program is intended to eventually encompass all
base providers such as AAFES, DeCA, Hospital, Supply, Finance, TMO, etc.
Currently at Osan, Base Services is the only player. AF Services senior
leadership folks have embraced the system throughout the AF as our
standard.

We routinely receive comments intended for various agencies throughout
Osan. We religiously forward to the responsible agency.

I courtesy copied our AAFES General Manager above.

Thanks for your comment,
