Vonage or Skype
I know a few months back there was some talk of these services being banned in korea. Is there any status update on this? Are you guys still using Vonage or Skype? I'll be heading out sometime in January and I just want check up on if I'll still be able to use one of these.
Thanks, |

Re: Vonage or Skype
My VOIP phone still works. There was a press release posted on the USFK site back in July regarding this. The plan to terminate VOIP service was suspended so for now we can still use Vonage, Skype, Lingo, etc.

Re: Vonage or Skype
i bought skype.. because no matter if they ban VOIP skype works differently and can't be banned... plus i only pay $38/year for a stateside phone number and then it's on a prepay basis (only if you call out) if someone calls you then it's free

Re: Vonage or Skype
I saw the message concerning VoIP usage and that after 1 Jul 07 you have to get service from the Korean providers. I get there Mar 07. It also stated that those with existing services would not be blocked after Jul 07. So, my question is this...I was planning to get Vonage while on leave in North Carolina before I get there, that way I could have all my stuff and be hooked up. Then, when I get there just plug in and go? Does this sound like a good plan? My biggest concern is getting a good camera set-up so I can do the video calling thing with my family, and get good quality...sound...picture etc...
Can someone give me a really good idea for all this set-up for when I am there?

Re: Vonage or Skype
Definately Skype. I picked up a Belkin Skype phone that hooks directly to my wireless router. No need to have a computer on and it works great. I also purchased the Skype In for around $38 and it give me up to 12 US telephone numbers which can be used as local calling for family and friends direct to your Skype phone. The phone works just like a cell phone on your wireless network in the vacinity of your home.
My daughter was stationed here last year and she did the Vonage thing. She had to pay a monthly fee for the service. Skype charges nothing for Skype to Skype calls and there is a small fee like I described above for Skype In. Skype Out is like .02 cents a minute to the US and different prices for other countries. Still a great deal. And most of the time the audio quality is just like a regular local phone call. Okay, now for a plug If you're in the Osan area, come out and see our band play Friday night at the 99 Bar, just outside the Osan AB main gate, March 16, starting at 9pm. Classic/Southern Rock, Country, & Blues. |

Re: Vonage or Skype
Another option is using yahoo messenger phone-in/phone out.. I do not have this but am looking into it.. Everyone who I have talked to about it have had no problems. 1 cent a minute to the states. Get a stateside phone number and voice mail for $29.90 annually. Then you just load up in $10 or $25 increments for your minutes. Seems like a good plan.. Anyone have any experience using this?

Re: Vonage or Skype
We have Broadvoice and it works great. About the same price as Vonage, but we get free calls to over 20 different countries, including South Korea. What this means is that if we want to order a pizza from a place down the block or call one of our friends with a local korean cell phone we don't pay anything. Vonage can't do that for you...
