Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

In filling out the paperwork from the passenger terminal for us to be able to fly unaccompanied, my husband came across a sentence that said something about "disciplinary action" if dependents remained in country longer than thirty days.

We already have our A-3 visas, good for a year, and we're planning on getting an apartment so we won't be in the dorms for longer than thirty days.

Anybody know anything about this?

Thanks.

Kara

Re: Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

You can only use Space A to fly over and visit your military member for 30 days. It's meant to be used as a morale booster for unaccompanied soldiers. If you use it to fly over and live here you will have to pay them back the airfare. I've heard that's it's expensive. I think your husband has to get a letter from his command approving you to fly Space A unaccompanied to Korea. They should have told him this.

I'm sure there are ways to handle this easily. Don't be discouraged until you get legal advice. Start at your Personnel or passenger service desk for regulations.

Re: Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

Are you planning on using space a to go back home and visit or something? My wife is here non command sponsored and was thinking about using space A to go back to the states for a little bit.

Re: Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

I'm looking for the specific regulation that stipulates how we would be able to use the Space-A option. I'm assuming it's in the JFTR but I haven't been able to find it yet.

I'd rather fly Space-A, not only because of the cost issue, but because we'd fly right onto base and not have to worry about getting the bus from Seoul with our luggage (and with three kids, this is quite an undertaking), and because we've had such positive experiences hopping in the past that I honestly prefer it to flying commercial. The way I figure it, we're not taking seats away from anyone else because we're so low on the priority, and if the plane is going to Korea anyway... Of course, the military doesn't always see things from the same perspective I do and I've learned to accept that.

But if anyone has a specific regulation reference I could use, I'd appreciate that. Thanks again.

Re: Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

It used to be on Osan's website but the link I have bookmarked is dead now. I did find several references to the less than 30 days stay on a few websites but they didn't provide a link to the actual regulation. I did find this link that has a PDF, I think it maybe what you are looking for.

Here is a forums website that specializes in Space A flights. The people on there can probably tell you where to find the regulation.

And I also found an email address that you can send your questions to at Osan.

I just found another email address for Osan. I'm not sure which one will work.

Re: Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

Sorry, I keep finding more info. Here is the USFK command policy letter pertaining to non command sponsored dependants using Space A.

Re: Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

Thank you so much! That is precisely what I was looking for. Not specifically what I wanted to read, but I really appreciate you taking time out to find that.

Re: Non-command-sponsored Space-A travel

I work at Yongsan as a NAF. Could I use Space A to fly back for a few weeks?
