skivvy nine dorms
hey, i'm getting to osan may 2nd, was wondering if anyone knows what kind of dorms junior enlisted assigned to skivvy nine (303rd IS) live in? are they the 1 + 1, 4 +1, or are they still a two to a room dorms? my unaccompanied baggage shipment goes out next tuesday, just wondering how much stuff i should bring. any information would be great!

Re: skivvy nine dorms
Does the Air Force not supply you with a sponsor in your new unit?

When we had our inprocessing brief, we were asked who all had sponsors before we mad it to Korea.....of the 100 of us that were in the room about 5 raised there hand and were all officers.

Re: skivvy nine dorms
I had one, but it was someone I know from a previous base who knew I was coming. I didn't realize it was that bad. I'll tell you what, though. I learned more about Korea in this forum than I ever learned from a sponsor. I wish every base had something like this.

Re: skivvy nine dorms
Okay...bear with me here as I beat my head against the wall...
We all know that the system isn't perfect...but, if you get within 60 days of your departure and don't have a sponsor what part of common sense fails to kick in to ask the question...hey, who the hell is my sponsor? With all of the changes that are coming in the personnel world, if you aren't proactive enough to make contact with your unit then you probably deserve to show up wondering what the heck is going on. Okay...thanks. That has absolutely nothing to do with what the original question was. I would recommend that you contact CMSgt Buggage (your first sergeant) by e-mail and ask him two questions (who is my sponsor? and what dorm will I be in?) You won't be allowed to leave the reception center until a sponsor comes and signs for you and if they don't get in touch with your sponsor they will be calling the Chief anyway. I'm pretty sure that you are in a 1+1 (sharing a bathroom with one other person) dormitory. I think other than the cops, there are only a couple of other airman dorms that have anyone doubled up. Have a safe trip and bring your 500lbs. You're entitled... Everyone else...make sure that if you are a supervisor that you are checking the gains roster and making sure that you are getting your people sponsored in properly. ![]() |

But I ask you, what if you have never PCS'd....which I would say 50% of the people that come to Korea are new to the military and have no idea what a sponsor is.... Also, Army does not have direct assignment program. You have no idea where you are going until you have been in Korea for at least 1 week. (E-6 and below anyway). I understand we are talking about Airforce.....but...... Your logic will work as long as you have PCS'd before....

Dameeun is the man to ask- but I 'd like to put in my 2 cents for fun.
As far as I know, the AF "Requires" sponsors! If you read Dameeun- "you won't be allowed to leave the reception center until an assigned sponsor picks you up...". Realistically, it sometimes doesn't happen. As far as people not having a PCS before arriving here, I suspect that happens much less in the AF because, compared to the Army, there are very few AF jobs that do not require technical training after basic, which normally means a PCS. But I'd venture to guess no sponsor is the norm for the Army. I just can't develop a lot of respect for the Army's lack of keeping track of real life. They often appear like a colony of ants to me. Waiting for the Queen to give directions, I guess. I believe there is a sad, sad, disconnect between what the Brass believes and what really happens among the lower ranks. I am appalled daily by what I see and hear. Get it together, grunts! (I can give an example of a Lt Col, a Unit Commander, no less, who arrived in Korea without even a sponsor package!!) Re: skivvy nine dorms
hey thanks all for the help, ya, i do have a sponsor (but only after I called the 303rd Orderly room and asked if and who)--he's given me the basics, but i had asked about dorms and he hadn't gotten back to me yet about that. that's why i came here, this has been the best place for me to get info about my assignment.
everybody's right about the sponsor program though, they are air force required, but not many do it the right way--i've sponsored 4 or 5 people now and every single one i've picked up from the airport, taken them to lunch or dinner (on me), gotten them set up in their room/apt., helped them in process, and taken them to the nearest walmart to get all the gear they need. To me, I don't think this is above and beyond, just hookin a brother up. But once again, thanks all! |

Re: skivvy nine dorms
Thank you for doing it the right way. Your shirt will thank you a million fold when you have to sponsor someone in here. My apologies for sounding like I was griping at you...certainly not the case. Can't help myself sometimes.
Life is good here and you are right, this is the place to get great information about your assignment. Bring your poncho with you...it should be starting to get rainy about the time you arrive! ![]() |

Re: Sponsors-AF
The Army is a little different than the Air Force in Korea. There are a limited number of places you can go Osan or Kunsan. With lower enlisted some will have a fairly good idea of where they will go 11B the Division but which unit is determined by the needs of the Div at that time. You would think a Truck driver would go to a Transportation Unit but like mechanics and cooks they can go to any unit That has a slot that needs to be filled. As most of these slots are 1 year tours they did this because many slots all of a suddden are not vacant person extended or are vacante early promotion to higher position or other reason for leaving. This allows them to fill slots immediatly instead of trying to project 6 months out and have to adjust when a soldier gets deferred or extended. But of course I am talking about 15 years ago but it seems it has not changed much.
