father maturnity leave

Does the AF have any kind of policy on giving fathers time off of work when the wife has a kid? I know us men don't need the time to recuperate after the baby is born but I'm just trying to see if I there's away where when I go up to 121 I don't have to burn my leave.

Ohh yeah my wife is due June 20th!!

Re: father maturnity leave

Ummm... not that I know of. I'm pretty sure my husband will be using all his leave when I have the baby. I am due June 16th. They SHOULD have some sort of paternity leave since they have maternity leave, but they don't. I'll just be happy if I have the baby early enough for my husband to take 2 weeks. His shop chief is leaving about 3 days after my due date, and that will make my husband the shop chief for that month. If I don't have the baby early, it will be all mommy at home with 3 kids under 3!

Re: father maturnity leave

Yeah, I havn't heard of anything like that here in Korea. But there are a few people that mentioned that they have heard of men getting time off in the AF at other stations without being charged leave. I'm sure if I was at my last unit in Hawaii I would of got some free time off, but being that this is Korea and most people had to leave there family back in the states there not going to be so generous with free leave.

Hopefully someone else will chime in that has some good news. So are you going to be having your kid at 121?

Re: father maturnity leave

Well, my husband got a couple of days off at Minot AFB when I had my son, but nothing when I had my daughter. We are headed to Hickam after this base. Did you enjoy it there? What career field are you in?

Yes, I will be delivering at 121. I was trying to be seen here until week 36, but they won't see me because I'm on thyroid medication. Stupid-- it doesn't really affect anything, but they seem to think it makes it complicated. I had my first visit up there on Monday *I just got here March 23* and will be up there again in a couple of weeks. I am worried about delivering all the way up there because I tend to have very fast labors/deliveries. I don't really want to deliver on a bus! :)

That does suck...for my company, they provide paternity leave. I'm surprised the military doesn't offer this.

Most companies are required under the Family Medical Leave Act to give time off to both men and women after a birth but not the military.

Re: father maturnity leave

Once again.....

I'll post the regulation soon....(before the end of April).

You (Army) are authorized 10 days of PTDY for the birth of your child. This should follow into all services, but for overseas only.

Just had a guy go through this, his wife delivered at 121. He is military and took 10 days PTDY.

Re: father maturnity leave

Well, we were stationed in Minot, North Dakota. What else is there to do? :) We were cooped up for 8 months out of the year. My first two were planned and 10 months 18 days apart. This little guy was a surprise. We found out about him in October and he is due when my daughter turns 18 months. They will all be within 29 months. But, we are happy... and very done!

Re: father maturnity leave

I thought that after the 38th they highly recommend you stay up at the storks nest up at Yongsan. My wife said that if you're military they require you to stay there starting your 36th or 38th week, I'm not to sure. But since my wife isn't she wants to go up there on her 39th week. I think we have to go up there next month for our first visit and fill out all the paperwork. I hope they have room at the storks nest since it seems much cheaper then the dragon hill.

Hickam is awesome, i would recommend living on base, make sure they give you the new privatized housing since it has central air. But then again with three kids I'm not sure how big those houses get on base, it was only me and the wife there so our two bedroom one bath house was fine.

You'll have lots of cheap entertainment for the kids while your there, just take them to the beach. I think i'm going to try and get back there after this assignment.
