Re: father maturnity leave
I read the FMLV but I thought it said you could take up to 10 days but they were unpaid leave. And since there isn't such a thing in the military they might say yes your allowed to take 10 days off but you'll have to use 10 days of leave. Which is fine if that's the worst case.

Re: father maturnity leave
They do recommend you stay up there after the 36th week, but I just cannot do that. With a 1 year old and a 2 year old, its just not in the gameplan for us. I like to go natural when I deliver, so if I end up delivering in this hospital or in the ambulance, I'm not that worried. I want to become a midwife, so I know quite a bit about delivering, just don't want to do it myself! haha
We do plan on living on base. We were thinking of trying to find a house to buy since BAH is so much and we have great credit and no debt, but the market there just isn't that great for 300k homes. So, most likely it will be base. Which is fine with me. I enjoy living on base. Most places have 4 bedrooms-- the most we'd ever need. A 3 bedroom is fine with us as two of them can share a room. We also plan on doing a lot of exploring when we get there. We both love the outdoors, and our kids REALLY love it. :) Having been in cold weather for so long, we'll enjoy the nice weather. |

Re: father maturnity leave
According to Hubby, the AF, at least here is doing away paternity leave. Best bet is to ask someone in charge of that kind of stuff, and save up leave.

Re: father maturnity leave
There is a program its called ordinary leave...no special treatment for normal deliveries although commanders can give special passes to anyone for just about anything they want...

Re: father maturnity leave
Someone mentioned that there's something called "daddy days" I was hopeing someone here posted something like that. I'm not going to go to work and ask if there's something called that because it just sounds a little to girly. I'm okay with taking ordinary leave I was just hoping to get some free days like the women get. :) jk I'm sure they deserve every day they get off and then some for all the stuff they go through.
Well I wish you the best, I hope you make it to the hospital on time. Don't they charge you if you have to take an ambulance to 121 or if you have to go to another hospital because you didn't stay up there by 121 after the 36th week? I guess that's not to bad either considering it cost about 3K here to have a kid in the hospital, I heard it cost a lot more in the states. Would tricare refund you 75% if that happens? Yeah 300K wouldn't get you that nice of a place in hawaii, you would have to get really lucky. I would stick with on base, it's safer and no traffic for you husband to get to work. |

Re: father maturnity leave
They haven't said anything about charging me. They told my husband that if I thought I couldn't make it to the hospital, to just call and the ambulance would come to our apartment and get me. I think it is pretty ridiculous to expect people to go live for weeks up near a hospital when they have other children to attend to. Command sponsored or not, pregnant mommies have a lot on their plate, here. I have a lot more responsiblity here than I did at the last base. My husband works a lot longer hours, so that leaves me being the main parent most of the time. Although, I have a lot more help here than I did before I moved over. Our families were not all that helpful.
IT would be nice if my husband got paternity leave because I really don't get maternity leave, you know? If I go overdue and he is not able to take any time off, I will be home taking care of three children by myself. Which is fine-- I'm not too worried about it. My oldest is already really good about helping me. He throws things away, he gets diapers for me when I need to change his sister, and he is potty trained. |

Re: father maturnity leave
There is no paternity leave. This subject comes up frequently. There are only two things for fathers:
1) Ordinary leave. 2) Permissive TDY for complications while the mother is still in the hospital that require him to be there or complications while the baby is still in the hospital that require him to be there. Typically only about 10 days is given for this, but it can be extended for longer but again only while one or the other is in the hospital. Commanders can give special passes, but that typically equates to the first couple duty days away and then you are expected to take leave. Women get convalescent leave which is not charged to their leave account in order to recuperate from the pregnancy. No paternity leave. Never has been. |
