I'm PCSing to Korea in August and wanted to know if there are any RC flyers out there and if there is a place to fly?

Cool Re: Any RC Aircraft flyers out there?

Not finding any information about you or where you will be coming on your profile, I will generalize. Yes there are RC fliers here. I can't tell you about airspace or allowed frequencies. Hopefully an enthusiast will contact you. I would bring my plane, for sure. NO Fuel!
I googled RC planes in Korea and found this video. It shows a nice model F-14 which, unfortunately, had an untimely demise. Recommend you all watch it! It answers a lot of questions!

My first time with a hand controlled balsa model and an .049 prop job ended in disaster also. A lot of gluing and painting went into it, but after a few good flights it got the strings/wires crossed, broke free, went straight up forever, then turned into a Kamikaze dive and dug 5 inches into the red clay! Oh well.

Re: Any RC Aircraft flyers out there?

Thanks for the reply and the link. I'm going to Osan and I fly electrics using Lithium Polymer batteries, no fuel.

Wow, how much does an airplane like the one in the video cost? My husband's birthday is coming up in August and I was thinking about getting him one of those cheap $30 airplanes, just so he can play around with it. The plane in that video looked like you could us it to fly spy missions to N. Korea.

There is a place on the right side as you walk towards the Songtan Bus/Train station. It is on the right as you are walking over the overpass. They have a club for car racing and I think for airplanes.

I'm sure it cost into the thousand's of $$$.

This RC costs over $3,000.

Nearly- give him $30 and point him toward the shop by the bridge. Yeah, that can be a very expensive hobby. The small battery versions are fun if you are testing the water.
I like the helicopters, but so far I'm happy just to watch others spend their money. As Chuck said, it can cost a lot if you crash. If you are near people and hit a person or a vehicle you can go bankrupt or to jail. (Don't fly near anything valuable.) Air Bases often have an area near a runway available.
Shaw AFB had a dedicated spot near the Vietnam Memorial Eternal Flame.

I don't know what they offer over there for $30, but in my experience no one is happy with a $30 airplane for long. They are underpowered and do not offer enough controllability to really enjoy or learn to fly proficiently. I would recommend the Wing Dragon. It has good power, all of the control surfaces necessary to fly, its durable and will survive minor and some major crashes and it flies slow enough for a beginner to keep up with it. Since I'm not in Korea and have never been there I would check to see what the local laws are concerning flying model aircraft, what frequencies are allowed, where can you fly and is insurance needed.

In the US you can fly uninsured on private property. However, to fly at RC club fields you must be an AMA member. Being an AMA member provides you many benefits including insurance to cover things like personal injury, property damage, theft of property. I don't know if it extends coverage to military members overseas and I need to find out if there is a Korean equivalent.

For anyone that is interested in what kind of aircraft I have, and what my skillbase, is here is a link to my blog on RC Groups.

Re: Any RC Aircraft flyers out there?

Thanks for the info. Could you recommend a RC helicopter? I think he is more interested in those.

Re: Any RC Aircraft flyers out there?

The Blade CX2 is a great beginner helicopter (I learned on it) and comes complete with everything needed to start flying. This helicopter is very stable and your husband will be able to hover it within 10 minutes. It won't do any fancy tricks but it a great way to learn how to fly helicopter orientation and its fun.
I would also recommend getting some repair parts with you initial purchase because everyone crashes.
Upper Blades
Lower Blades
I would also get an extra battery or 2 because the fly time on each battery is between 12-15 min and the batteries take 1 hour to charge.
Here is a link to a review and forum with more information.
The links above are to a company that should ship to Korea but I don't know for sure because I haven't tried them yet. I would try looking locally first before ordering online.
